Mayor Recoulat Visits Garrahan Hospital To Enhance Local Health Services

The local leader seeks to learn from the renowned hospital's practices and exchange knowledge on health infrastructure.

In a significant effort to strengthen local health services, Mayor Francisco Recoulat visited the renowned Garrahan Hospital and its accompanying foundation on March 21, 2025. Accompanied by municipal health secretary Dr. Sergio Valente, engineer Mauricio Girardi, and various local representatives, Recoulat aimed to learn from the exemplary operations of this prestigious hospital, noted for its high-complexity pediatric care.

During the visit, Recoulat stated, "Since some time ago, we had been planning this visit; our intention was to learn about the operation of this model hospital and connect the technical health and infrastructure teams to share information and experiences. This allowed us to take back several ideas for planning and implementing in our municipal health system." His focus was not only on understanding the hospital's operational model but also on gathering insights that could impact his district's healthcare.

Valuable exchanges were facilitated by local representatives, including María Claudia Peirone, Teresa Susana Díaz, Alicia Aurora Gauna, and Susana Noemí Osio, who have long collaborated with the Garrahan institution. The group was warmly received by several distinguished professionals including the Executive Medical Director Dr. Mariel Sánchez and other key figures in pediatric healthcare.

As part of the visit, the group was introduced to the Garrahan Foundation’s recycling program, which has garnered substantial national support through material donations. Recoulat emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating, "We had the opportunity to learn about the Foundation's Recycling Program, where they receive donations from across the country. It was also an important chance to visit Casa Garrahan, a significant space for patients and families who must travel from all provinces for medical treatments."

The Casa Garrahan, created on March 25, 1997, provides essential support for families dealing with medical issues, featuring 43 rooms equipped with private bathrooms, communal kitchens, and various recreational areas. This initiative ensures that those undergoing treatments can find a home away from home during their challenging times.

Furthermore, Recoulat’s visit aimed to explore fundamental technical aspects that could aid in upcoming projects for the Pedro T. Orellana Municipal Hospital. Significant developments are underway, including the projection of a new Intensive Care Unit on the current hospital’s upper floor. The insights gained from Garrahan's experienced teams will inform these enhancements, aiming to improve healthcare delivery in Trenque Lauquen.

Pioneering in Latin America, the Garrahan Hospital has a storied history of innovative surgical procedures and is revered for its advanced treatment techniques. Its dedication to pediatric care is matched by its forward-thinking environmental initiatives, showcased through the Garrahan Foundation's commitment to sustainability over the past 25 years. This includes extensive recycling efforts, have enabled the collection of more than 694 tons of recyclable material since May 2008, including a staggering 24.4 million bottle caps.

The Foundation, currently led by Lic. Patricia Gavilán, not only promotes environmental awareness but also engages in teaching, research, and continuous education efforts, extending its impact beyond the hospital premises.

Recoulat recognized the community’s invaluable role in these environmentally friendly initiatives, stating, "Through the organization of local volunteers, we have collectively contributed significantly to these environmental programs, demonstrating the spirit of solidarity that defines Trenque Lauquen."

In reflecting upon the visit, it's clear that the collaboration between local authorities and the Garrahan Foundation is pivotal. The exchange not only promises improvements in hospital infrastructure but also enhances the local health system's responsiveness to families in need.

As Mayor Recoulat and his team continue to draw inspiration from their visit, the partnership with Garrahan symbolizes hope for many families in Trenque Lauquen and potentially sets a precedent for similar cooperative efforts across the region. The combined emphasis on health, community service, and environmental consciousness encapsulates a modern approach to public health and civic responsibility.
