Maxis And Huawei Launch Joint Innovation Center For 5G Development

Collaboration aims to boost Malaysia's digital economy and nurture local talent through advanced technology

Maxis, a leading telecommunications firm based in Malaysia, is setting the stage for advancing 5G technology through its latest collaboration with the global giant Huawei. On August 13, 2024, the partnership was unveiled during the Malaysia Commercialisation Year (MCY) Summit, where both companies also showcased real-world applications of 5G-Advanced.

This strategic alliance aims to establish a Joint Innovation Center dedicated to developing cutting-edge solutions to improve customer experiences and operational efficiencies. The center is particularly focused on rapid deployment and exploring various industry use cases.

Maxis outlined its objectives clearly, emphasizing the need to strengthen Malaysia’s standing within the global telecommunications arena. The initiative is expected to drive significant technological advancements across the region, positioning Malaysia as a key player.

Both firms plan to explore innovative technologies such as mobile edge computing, network slicing, and end-to-end network orchestration. These technologies are pivotal for enhancing gigabit capacity and addressing the demands of modern mobile networks.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) will also be central to the project, improving network efficiencies. By utilizing these technologies, Maxis and Huawei aim to maximize the potential of next-generation networks.

“Earlier this year, we were the first to showcase 5G-Advanced technology for both Malaysia and the region,” stated Goh Seow Eng, CEO of Maxis. He expressed confidence about the collaboration and its role in fulfilling Malaysia’s digital ambitions.

Goh emphasized the need to focus on human capital development alongside commercial innovations. This approach is meant to maximize the benefits of 5G-Advanced for local enterprises and industries.

Similarly, Simon Sun, CEO of Huawei Malaysia, noted the importance of this partnership to Malaysia’s digital transformation agenda. He reiterated the objective of transforming Malaysia’s tech sector to bolster its regional standing as the ASEAN Technology Capital.

Building upon their previous collaboration, the centers will particularly focus on nurturing local talent, including university students. This investment aims to furnish the Malaysian workforce with skills necessary for the rapidly evolving telecommunications sector.

Hands-on training and research projects are planned, offering practical experience in advanced telecommunications technologies. Collaborations like these are seen as critical for ensuring sustainability and growth within the industry.

During the MCY Summit, Maxis displayed various 5G-Advanced applications with tangible benefits across sectors like education, healthcare, and manufacturing. Innovations on display included remote learning platforms, telemedicine for healthcare, and smart sorting systems for manufacturing.

Historically, Maxis and Huawei have had significant success together, including the first-ever 5G-Advanced showcase held in Southeast Asia earlier this year. Their continuous efforts to push the boundaries of telecommunications have led to exciting possibilities for economic growth.

With this partnership, the future looks bright for Malaysia’s telecommunications industry. Commitment to innovation and talent development might just pave the way for Malaysia as the leading hub of state-of-the-art technologies.
