Max George, the singer best known as part of the boy band The Wanted, is currently hospitalized as he faces serious health issues related to his heart. The 36-year-old has shared updates with fans, detailing his condition and expressing his determination to recover, even as he prepares to spend Christmas confined to his hospital bed.
Last week, George revealed on Instagram, after feeling unwell, he was admitted to the hospital where doctors identified issues with his heart. The primary diagnosis is a rare condition known as 2:1 atrioventricular block, which affects the heart's electrical impulses. According to the NHS, this condition can lead to slower heart rates and abnormal rhythms, resulting from disruption of signals between the different chambers of the heart.
“I’ve got an issue with the bottom part of my heart,” George explained. “It’s called a block. The tricky bit is what I have put in here because until I have more tests, we don’t know what caused it.” His situation has been described by many as particularly concerning, especially as Max openly shared his motive behind discussing his health—hoping it might help raise awareness of heart conditions.
Max's updates have been candid. He reported, “I hope you are having a good night. Spoke to the nurse earlier and good news is I get to have a scan earlier than I thought... So, that's where I am at, feeling OK tonight.” Despite this positivity, he admitted the waiting game for test results has been tough on him mentally. “This is going to be a difficult few weeks or months … and Christmas in a hospital bed wasn’t exactly what I had planned!” he lamented.
It was reported by sources including The Sun and Sky News, on December 15, 2023, the singer indicated the necessity for surgical intervention. He is set to undergo surgery to have a pacemaker fitted—a battery-operated device aimed at regulating his heart rhythm. Pacemakers are typically implanted during surgical procedures conducted with local anesthetic, ensuring patients experience minimal discomfort.
The singer, who has battled with alcoholism, reassured fans, saying, “We’ve cancelled out many possibilities for this condition—like alcohol for example, I’ve not had a drink for four-and-a-half years, so it’s not due to drinking.” George's decision to abstain from alcohol stems from past experiences and the tragic loss of his bandmate Tom Parker, who died from cancer last year at 33.
George noted the emotional support he is receiving from his partner Maisie Smith, whom he met during the 2020 season of Strictly Come Dancing. She has been by his side during this difficult time, offering love and encouragement. His mother, Barbara, stated, “We are beside ourselves, but we are keeping our fingers crossed,” emphasizing the strong familial support he has as he navigates this challenge.
Many celebrities and friends have rallied around Max with messages of support. Siva Kaneswaran, his bandmate, expressed solidarity with the words, “Here for you brother. Rest up and get well soon.” Other stars from different walks of life, including JLS member Marvin Humes and Strictly's Katya Jones, have also reached out, showcasing the tight-knit nature of the entertainment community.
Max George has made it clear he sees the situation as a wake-up call, explaining, “I count myself very lucky this was caught when it was, even though it's been quite shocking.” He looks forward to the upcoming determined steps toward recovery, which he estimates will take about “a month” of restful recuperation.
With plans for future engagements already lined up, including performances with The Wanted 2.0 celebrating past hits and tributes to departed friend Tom, Max's optimism shines through his health update. He mentioned upcoming projects with his band and noted their plans for a performance at Manchester Cathedral, highlighting the continuing legacy of The Wanted.
Despite the hurdles he now faces, Max expressed determination: “Whatever the outcome of these tests, I’ll take it on with all I’ve got. I’m surrounded by love and support from my wonderful partner, family, and friends. I’m 100% in the best place for this situation.”
George's condition and treatment are tightly followed by the media and fans alike, drawing attention to the seriousness of heart health and the support required during such times. One thing is clear—Max George intends to fight through this, and with the backing of friends and fans, there’s hope for a full recovery.
