Max George Celebrates Recovery After Heart Surgery

The Wanted singer shares heartfelt updates as he returns home for the holidays following pacemaker surgery.

Max George, the renowned singer from The Wanted, has been keeping his fans updated on his health following some serious heart surgery earlier this month. The star, celebrated for his participation on BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, underwent the operation to fit a pacemaker on December 22, after being diagnosed with atrioventricular block, which causes the heart to beat abnormally slow.

Initially, George shared his health concerns on December 12, indicating he might have to spend Christmas in the hospital. His condition prompted emergency surgical intervention much sooner than expected, as the severity of his symptoms increased. “Operation took around 2 and half hours. The main issue being some of my veins had collapsed where the wires were meant to go… But the surgeons and nurses at the NHS have been incredible. I owe everything to them,” George said, reflecting on his medical team’s care.

Following the successful procedure, George expressed relief and joy when he returned home for the Christmas holidays. On social media, he shared his sentiments, posting “It’s so good to be home” alongside warm images of his reunion with his girlfriend, former EastEnders star Maisie Smith.

News of his recovery has been met with overwhelming support from fans and colleagues alike. Oti Mabuse, another Strictly alumni, welcomed him home with kind words on his Instagram post. “Welcome home ❤️,” she wrote, which Max echoed with gratitude. Fans flooded his comment section with well-wishing messages, expressing their happiness for his recovery and some lighthearted advice to take it easy during the festive season.

On Christmas Day, George delighted his followers with updates about his time at home. One particularly heartwarming moment featured him relaxing with his beloved pitbull, Albert. “Missed My Boy,” he captioned the touching image of the two cuddled up on the couch, watching football. Just weeks before, George had felt “bruised and battered” after his surgery, but he now conveyed his happiness at being surrounded by loved ones.

While recovering at home, George also shared funny anecdotes from his hospital stay, including one incident where he accidentally caused minor flooding after leaving his sink on. “Just got out of bed then; 2am it is. My feet just went to about a foot of water,” he recounted to fans, showcasing his light-hearted spirit even amid health struggles.

The singer noted, though, he still has some challenges ahead. Despite the successful surgery and optimistic prognosis, doctors have plans for additional tests relating to lung issues, which he casually mentioned as “the least of my worries right now.” He remains hopeful, adding, “All good, bit battered and bruised and knackered but.” It’s evident his positive outlook prevails, spurred on by the love from friends, family, and supporters.

George has been candid about how his health issues have impacted his life, especially as the holiday approached. He stated earlier this month about the uncertainty of being able to celebrate with his family and friends due to his medical situation. Despite initial fears of spending Christmas alone in the hospital, he reconciled with the unexpected joy of being home on Christmas Eve, jokingly acknowledging the shifting circumstances of his recovery.

For George, this ordeal not only serves as a moment of personal introspection but also highlights the importance of solidarity and support throughout one’s struggles. A touching tribute to his late bandmate Tom Parker, who died from brain cancer last year, is etched onto his skin—a tattoo of Tom’s birthdate positioned closely to where his new pacemaker lies. This marks both remembrance and resilience, interweaving loss with hope.

Max George’s return home marks the beginning of both recovery and reflection as he continues to navigate this chapter of his life. Grateful for the support he’s received and the care of medical professionals, the star remains engaged with his audience, offering glimpses of his life post-surgery. There’s no doubt his loyal fans will continue to cheer him on as he embarks on this new path toward full recovery, celebrating each step along the way.
