Matty Healy Declines To Write About Taylor Swift Romance

The 1975 frontman emphasizes his disinterest in using past relationships for songwriting inspiration

Matty Healy, known as the frontman of the popular band The 1975, recently opened up about his artistic direction following his brief romance with pop star Taylor Swift. He conveyed his disinterest in writing songs about personal relationships, particularly his past involving Swift, during his appearance on Joshua Citarella's Doomscroll podcast on October 22.

For many musicians, drawing inspiration from romantic experiences is almost second nature. Taylor Swift, for example, is renowned for crafting emotionally charged songs based on her relationships. Her latest album, The Tortured Poets Department, features multiple tracks believed to reference her time with Healy, including songs like "Guilty as Sin?" and "I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)." But for Healy, the allure of addressing such themes faded over time.

During the podcast, Healy, now 35, explained, "Last year I became a way more well-known public figure for loads of different reasons. The only reason I was interested is kind of like, what I was doing." He acknowledged how some artists get caught up in their personal lore and the narratives surrounding them. While he respects those who choose to do so, he asserts his own stance as quite different.

Healy elaborated on this artistic choice, saying, "I would kind of just be lying if I made a record about, I don’t know, all the stuff said about me or my casual romantic liaisons or whatever it may be because I became known for it. I think that's an obvious thing to draw from, and I'm just not interested."

This perspective marks a significant change for the musician, who once wore his heart on his sleeve and sang candidly about heartbreak and relationships, particularly during earlier stages of his career. He added, "So the idea of making a record about something personal to me, which by the time it’s released is going to be like two years old, is not something I'm interested in doing."

While Healy remains focused on his music and future projects, Taylor Swift has made headlines with her album’s tracks believed to reflect her turbulent romance with Healy. Songs on the album appear to chronicle their passionate—though fleeting—affair, providing her listeners with tales of devotion, heartbreak, and self-reflection. One track, "loml," appears to suggest the impermanence of their relationship, echoing sentiments of nostalgia and frustration.

One poignant lyric from Swift reads, "It was legendary / It was momentary / It was unnecessary / Should’ve let it stay buried." These words capture the essence of their romance, highlighting the fleeting nature of their connection and the emotional aftermath it left behind. Fans have speculated about the various tracks on Swift's album, citing lines they believe shed light on their short-lived entanglement.

After his split with Swift, Matty Healy moved on to dating model Gabbriette Bechtel, and the couple announced their engagement earlier this year. This newfound relationship offers him a sense of stability, and his focus seems firmly set on both his personal happiness and musical endeavors.

Healy’s comments have sparked conversations among fans who dissect both his quotes and Swift’s lyrics. Many listeners are elaborately piecing together narratives from the songs, forming connections about the timeline of events, and examining how Swift channels her recent experiences. Since their breakup, she has reportedly begun dating Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce, which showcases her ability to swiftly rebound and evolve as her life continues to be front-page news.

Swift's ability to channel personal experiences directly through her song lyrics contrasts sharply with Healy's intent. For artists like Swift, exploring love—both its joys and sorrows—can be both therapeutic and commercially advantageous. Listeners often find solace and connection through those vulnerable lyrics, feeling as though they are not alone during their own emotional experiences. Yet, for Healy, distancing himself from the media’s narrative around his romances positions him as someone striving for authenticity beyond the tabloids and the public’s relentless gaze.

Despite the scathing lyrics directed toward him, Healy’s family doesn’t see the potential fallout as significant. His aunt commented on the matter, stating, “She writes about all her relationships, doesn’t she? I don’t think it will come as a shock to him at all. He’s very happy in his new relationship, so I’m sure he will be focusing on his music and love life instead.”

Overall, the discussion surrounding Matty Healy's approach to songwriting post-Taylor Swift presents conflicting views of personal artistry within the music industry. Healy's reluctance to mine his personal experiences for material marks a departure from conventional practices often seen among his peers. While Swift seems invigorated by the tales she weaves, Healy's narrative arc heads toward less conventional terrain—a move dedicated to the essence of his artistry rather than the chatter surrounding it.

With lyrics from Swift’s album circulating widely and sparking debates among fans, it's clear the aftermath of their brief relationship remains as captivating as the romance itself. Healy's current path reflects not just personal decisions about love, but broader themes of artistic integrity and evolution as musicians navigate their identities amid public scrutiny. Healy’s mindset exemplifies the push and pull of celebrity life, where personal narratives morph through both legacy and new partnerships, challenging traditional methods of artistic expression.
