Mattia Liberali Set For Serie A Debut With AC Milan

Talented 17-year-old midfielder starts against Genoa at San Siro on club's 125th anniversary.

On December 15, 2024, young talent Mattia Liberali is set to make his much-anticipated Serie A debut for AC Milan against Genoa at the historic San Siro Stadium. This occasion is extra special as it coincides with the club’s 125th anniversary, making it not only a significant milestone for the team but also for this promising 17-year-old midfielder.

Liberali's rise through the ranks of AC Milan’s youth system has been nothing short of remarkable. Born on April 6, 2007, in Carate Brianza, he joined the Rossoneri academy at just eight years old and has since captivated fans and coaches alike with his impressive skills and game intelligence. Having earned his first professional contract at the age of 16, he has showcased his talents with both the Primavera and Milan Futuro teams.

Head coach Paulo Fonseca has made the decision to start Liberali amid numerous absences within the squad. Key players Christian Pulisic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and Yunus Musah are all sidelined, creating the opening for the young player to step up. "He’s been working with us and is a quality player, but he must continue on his track and grow. He needs the right time," Fonseca remarked during his earlier discussions about Liberali’s potential.

Prior to this historic debut, Liberali has had noteworthy performances with AC Milan's youth teams. The left-footed attacking midfielder has scored three goals and provided one assist across 18 appearances this season, along with notable moments such as scoring during the U17 European Championship last summer where he helped Italy clinch the title. This included two goals—one being against England, which was particularly memorable.

Despite being hailed as one of the club's brightest prospects, the past few months have presented their challenges for Liberali. He gained significant attention during the U.S. pre-season tour, playing against powerhouses like Real Madrid and Manchester City, exhibiting his flair and creativity. Yet, his transition to professional football with the first team has not been without its hurdles, as he was deployed sporadically between the Milan Futuro and Primavera. Nonetheless, he continues to show promise, with Fonseca believing strongly in his abilities.

“Liberali played the pre-season against Real Madrid and Barcelona. To me, it was clear he has a great future. If he continues working with humility, he can become an important player,” Fonseca commented, emphasizing his confidence in the young star’s future contributions to the team.

Adding to the excitement surrounding his debut is the acknowledgment of comparisons made by football legend Billy Costacurta, who likened Liberali to Manchester City star Phil Foden. Costacurta’s words, "Mattia Liberali, 2007 of Milan: is young, me reminds Foden," reflect the high expectations placed on the teenager. Such comparisons, though flattering, come with inherent pressure, but for Liberali, this moment could be the catalyst for what will hopefully be a remarkable career.

While many eyes will be glued to the match, it is also worth noting Liberali's commitment off the pitch. Despite his success on the field, he has maintained focus on his studies, attending the third year of a scientific-sports high school. His father disclosed, "He would like to continue, perhaps becoming a physiotherapist or osteopath. Sports journalism also interests him." This dedication balances his aspirations within football and academic pursuits.

With AC Milan’s absence of key players presenting this opportunity, Liberali is now challenged to seize the moment. Milan's management has high hopes for his performance today, encouraging fans to rally behind the young midfielder as he embarks on this new chapter. His debut against Genoa will not only be significant for Liberali as he takes the field at San Siro but also mark the beginning of what many hope will be a stellar career with the Rossoneri.

The excitement of his debut, particularly during such a momentous occasion for Milan, creates anticipation among supporters. With the weight of expectations on his shoulders, how Liberali will perform will determine his immediate future with the club.

All eyes will be on Liberali, who stands on the brink of greatness. Fans hope this debut could pave the way for his establishment as one of AC Milan's key players. With support from legends of the club and guidance from his coach, Mattia Liberali is ready to showcase his talent on the biggest stage of Italian football.
