Matthias Dandois has made BMX history by winning his 10th world championship title, culminating his illustrious career with yet another victory. The iconic flatland rider from France achieved this remarkable feat on Saturday at the BMX Flat World Championships held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. At 35 years old, Dandois demonstrated his relentless creativity and skill, qualifying for the final alongside fellow French riders Julien Baran and Anatole Rahain.
After finishing third in the preliminaries, Dandois soared above the competition during the finals, completing stunning runs with scores surpassing 90 points. Under the bright Abu Dhabi sun, Dandois executed perfect maneuvers, concluding with his fist raised triumphantly. When the results were announced, he fell to the ground, tears running down his face, visibly overcome with emotion. His performance was met with rapturous applause from the audience, followed by him joyfully singing the Marseillaise atop the podium.
Dandois expressed relief and happiness following his victory, stating, "Before anything, relief! I had put myself in quite the situation by announcing this was my last competition. It would have been disappointing to end any other way." This 10th championship was especially meaningful for Dandois, who had not been crowned world champion since 2021. After suffering from injury—the fracture of his ankle—and finishing third at the Glasgow event the previous year, he knew he had to secure this title before stepping away from competition.
"It was incredibly difficult! The Japanese competitors are very strong. I was aware this was my last UCI run ever, the final chance to claim this title. I considered everything: if I finished fifth, it wouldn't feel great at all. Therefore, it didn’t feel like pressure; I rode harder than usual and, as it turned out, I won quite easily," he explained, noting the pressure he felt was not overwhelming.
The atmosphere at the championship was electric, with many spectators enjoying the performances. Dandois noted, "It's so lovely. There's quite the crowd here, and everyone is supportive. My rivals were genuinely happy for me. Knowing it was my last competition, they didn’t harbor any jealousy. It felt very positive among us." His achievement prompted laughter when he remarked, "It’ll take some time before someone else earns ten like me!"
Reflecting on his 16-year career, Dandois remarked, "The first word I think of is pride. It’s easy to have one great showing, but maintaining consistent excellence over time is no small feat." Starting his championship run back in 2008, his last championship win adds to his collection of titles won across this exceptional span.
With his career now concluding, Dandois has plans to mentor the next generation of talent within BMX. He emphasized the importance of ensuring young athletes have the support and resources needed to excel. "We have incredible talent here in France, and it's time we invest to help them reach their ambitions. I’m fully committed to contributing positively to the sport," he noted.
Dandois’ career has been nothing short of remarkable. With ten world titles—including championships won in 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2024—as well as three European titles and recognition at the X Games, his legacy within BMX flat is firmly established. His final performance showcased not only his skilled ride but also the spirit of camaraderie among the athletes.
Matthias Dandois leaves behind not just titles, but inspiration for future generations of BMX riders. His commitment to the sport and aspirations for its growth will resonate long beyond the finish line.
