Mattarella Honors Sammy Basso's Legacy In New Year's Address

President's reflections highlight the courage and spirit of the late progeria activist.

On December 31, 2024, President Sergio Mattarella delivered his traditional New Year's Address, taking the opportunity to pay tribute to Sammy Basso, the young activist who passed away just three months prior from progeria.

During his speech, Mattarella highlighted the significance of Basso's life, encapsulating his enduring spirit and resilience. "The end of the year is also time for reflection. I have encountered values and positive and encouraging behaviors... I have read them in the words of Sammy Basso, which teach us to live a full life, beyond any difficulty," said the President, reflecting on the impact Sammy had made throughout his life.

Sammy Basso, born in 1995, was diagnosed with Hutchinson-Gilford progeria at just two years old. Despite his health struggles, Basso became known for his remarkable courage and his efforts to raise awareness about the rare genetic condition. His advocacy efforts included co-founding the Associazione italiana progeria Sammy Basso alongside his parents, aimed at promoting research and support for those afflicted by the disease.

Basso reached widespread recognition following the National Geographic documentary titled The Journey of Sammy, which captured his travels along Route 66 with his family and friends. Just days before his untimely death on October 5, he was honored at the Scuola Grande di San Rocco in Venice for his contributions to increasing public knowledge about progeria.

On the night of his passing, he was having dinner with family and friends at the Villa Razzolini Loredan restaurant in Treviso. Despite the immediate medical attention, efforts to revive him were unfortunately unsuccessful. His sudden departure left many heartbroken but his message of resilience has echoed through the tributes paid to him.

Echoing Basso's thoughts, Mattarella went on to reflect on the essence of embracing life, even when faced with its challenges. Collaboratively, the two shared the message of living fully. "His words taught us to embrace life as it is, with its difficulties but always magnificent..." Mattarella urged, advocating for the importance of cherishing the time we have.

Sammy left behind poignant words encapsulated in a letter he wished to be read upon his passing. The letter expressed his gratitude for life and the importance of love over personal glory. He encouraged those around him to celebrate, reflect, and cherish their moments together rather than mourn excessively. "I am happy to have lived my life alongside you all. If you wish to honor me, do not waste too much time on rituals; instead, toast to my and your health and be cheerful," he wrote.

This heartfelt message speaks to the essence of what it means to live fully, as Sammy had, inspiring countless others to embrace life, reflecting the sentiments shared by President Mattarella during his address.

Beyond personal reflections, Mattarella's address discussed broader societal themes, such as the fight for women’s rights and the need for collective societal engagement, reinforcing the idea of change and hope. His homage to Sammy Basso stood as both personal and symbolic, highlighting the intersection of individual struggles and collective fortitude.

President Mattarella's acknowledgment of Basso's legacy during such a significant national event struck chords of hope as the new year approached. The President’s tribute not only honored Basso’s contributions but also called attention to the invaluable lessons of strength, love, and the importance of advocacy for those who suffer from rare diseases.

Sammy Basso may no longer be with us, but his legacy will continue to inspire many as we carry forward lessons of courage and compassion, living fully through our journeys, no matter how difficult they may seem.
