Matsu Attracts Tourists With Blue Tears Phenomenon

As Tomb Sweeping Day approaches, hotel bookings soar amid vibrant spring activities.

The upcoming four-day Tomb Sweeping Day holiday in early April 2025 is set to fuel a surge in spring travel, particularly to the beautiful Matsu Islands. As of March 23, 2025, Matsu has emerged as the hottest destination in Taiwan for hotel bookings, boasting an occupancy rate exceeding 60% just three days prior to the holiday.

Known for its enchanting 'blue tears' phenomenon, which occurs from April to June each year, Matsu has become a dream destination for tourists eager to experience its magical lights. This year's blue tears season has just begun, and the early reservation surges highlight its captivating allure.

In conjunction with this natural marvel, the Lienchiang County Transportation and Tourism Bureau has introduced the "Matsu Blue Tears Time Light Series Activities" for 2025. This initiative includes a range of activities designed to enhance the visitor experience, such as concerts featuring blue-themed music, food festivals showcasing local delicacies, and the engaging 'Devil's Kneading Board Stomping Point' challenge.

Tourists eager for a more immersive experience can participate in activities like the 'Drawing Deer Horns' event on Dahan Island, where fun and excitement blend with local traditions. The series exemplifies Matsu's commitment to providing unique experiences that resonate with its visitors.

The Matsu Islands have plans to host the 'Chasing Tears and Stars Expert Experience' from late April through June 2025. Local experts will guide visitors through four townships and five islands, offering enchanting tours that showcase the breathtaking blue tears against a backdrop of starry skies. Such activities promise to create unforgettable memories for tourists.

To promote Matsu as an ideal wedding photography destination, the local government is also introducing wedding photography subsidies. This initiative aims to attract couples looking for picturesque locations to capture their special moments, establishing Matsu as a romantic backdrop for love stories.

This year, Taiwan's tourism authorities are also promoting notable attractions through their 'Taiwan Tourism 100 Bright Spots' initiative, where different counties take turns being featured as focal points for travelers. For April, Miaoli and Matsu are the highlighted destinations, further boosting Matsu's profile as a must-visit spot during the holiday.

Professor Chiang Kuo-Ping from National Taiwan Ocean University has contributed valuable insights into the blue tears phenomenon, explaining that the sudden bursts of light are related to the 'sexual reproduction' process of nocturnal microorganisms. His research indicates that these remarkable occurrences are not only beautiful but also biologically significant, reflecting the delicate balance of marine life.

All these developments showcase the exceptional charm of Matsu, capturing the interest of numerous travelers in anticipation of the holiday period. The combination of natural wonders, engaging tourism activities, and promotional efforts by both local authorities and experts positions Matsu as a vibrant destination.

The upcoming Tomb Sweeping Day holiday promises to be a prime opportunity for visitors to witness Matsu's stunning natural displays and participate in its culturally rich activities. With a bustling influx of tourists expected, Matsu is primed to shine as a star in Taiwan's tourism landscape during the Spring season.
