Matalan Recalls Christmas Decorations Over Choking Hazard

Urgent safety alert issued for festive ornaments prompts consumers to return products for refunds.

Matalan has issued an urgent recall of several Christmas decorations after they were found to pose significant choking hazards, leaving consumers to juggle holiday spirits with safety concerns.

The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) revealed the situation, stating these products failed to meet the General Product Safety Regulations 2005. With safety at the forefront, Matalan urges customers to return the items for full refunds, and they won’t need receipts to claim their money back.

The specific products involved include the Matalan Stripe Tree Christmas Decoration, the Matalan Doughnuts Christmas Tree Decoration 3PK, and several others. The recall affects festive-themed items sold between August 5 and October 21 this year. The Stripe Tree model, identified by the barcode 6207676000004 and model number M207676, has particularly raised concerns. "If you have bought (the product) for someone else or know someone who has one then please let them know immediately about this notice," Matalan stated.

The OPSS Marshalling report adds, "The product presents a risk of choking as small parts can easily detach from the decoration." This risk is not unique to just one item; other decorations, including the Doughnuts and Sweets decorations, also present similar dangers. These pieces can disassemble quickly, leading to small components which children could accidentally swallow.

Notably, the Gingerbread Man decoration, sold as part of the 4PK collection, and the Ice Lolly decoration posed lesser risks, with the former having passed some safety regulations, albeit not all. The precautions taken with these products were highlighted, but the immediate action by Matalan came as evidence surfaced concerning disassembly issues related to the Stripe Tree. According to the OPSS, "All of the products did not meet the General Product Safety Regulations 2005," prompting swift action.

For consumers, returning the decorations has never been easier. Whether the product was purchased for oneself or as gifts, Matalan is facilitating returns by not requiring receipts. The customer service team is accessible for inquiries at 0333 0044444 or via email at [email protected]. For those who prefer traditional mail, correspondence can be sent to Perimeter Road, Knowsley Industrial Estate, Liverpool, L33 7SZ.

This isn't the first time holiday decorations have come under scrutiny. Product recalls are not unusual during the festive season, as retailers often find themselves inspecting every item for safety compliance amid the seasonal rush. Other recent recalls include the Teddy Sherpa electric throw from The Range due to overheating risks and John Lewis recalling their Quality Street Sweet Glass Baubles, which posed injury threats.

Recalls make up an integral part of consumer rights, and shoppers are encouraged to stay informed. Understanding the risks associated with certain products not only protects individual safety but helps maintain trust within retail markets. The overarching message remains clear: if you possess any of these Matalan decorations, return them without delay to avoid any potential accidents.

For Matalan, the recall serves as both a necessary consumer safety measure and a reminder of their commitment to quality. "We pride ourselves on delivering great quality at great prices and we're really sorry for any inconvenience caused," stated the retailer, trying to mitigate customer dissatisfaction. The proactive recall reflects the retailer's responsibility to safeguard families during the holiday season, where attention to safety can make all the difference.
