On April 18, 2025, a "huge" waterspout captured the attention of residents in An Thoi ward, Phu Quoc city, Kien Giang province. Observers noted its impressive size from a distance of 5-10 kilometers, prompting many to stop and take photos as it swirled dramatically over the sea.
Witnesses reported that the waterspout was first spotted at approximately 8:20 AM, near the shore of An Thoi. Local resident Doan Thi Thu Thuy was among those who halted their vehicles to document the phenomenon, describing the waterspout as towering hundreds of meters high. "This is a rare sight in Phu Quoc," she said, as she recorded the swirling column of water with her phone.
The waterspout formed under conditions of dry weather, with no rain reported at the time. According to Le Xuan Hien, director of the Kien Giang Meteorological and Hydrological Station, black clouds began swirling over the sea around 9 AM, suggesting the potential for the waterspout's formation. Hien explained that the prolonged heat in the area had created an environment conducive to thunderstorms and whirlwinds.
"Residents should secure their homes and trim any trees nearby to minimize risks," Hien advised, emphasizing the importance of preparedness in the face of changing weather patterns. He noted that from February to mid-April, Kien Giang province had experienced rainfall ranging from 60-150mm, with the Ha Tien - Phu Quoc sea area receiving the highest amounts—particularly in Cua Can and Duong Dong, where rainfall reached approximately 366-430mm.
As the waterspout developed, it was reported to be a few kilometers away from the mainland, surrounded by numerous boats. Local resident Lien, whose home is near An Thoi port, remarked on the impressive sight. "The waterspout was very large and clearly visible. It lasted for about five minutes before dissipating," she shared.
Waterspouts are defined as strong whirlwinds that form in a small area, sucking water from the surface into a cumulus cloud, creating a funnel-like shape. Typically, they originate from storm clouds, particularly those with electrical activity. A thunderstorm can last several hours, swirling within a diameter of 10-16 kilometers and traveling hundreds of kilometers while potentially causing destruction along its path.
During the southern wind season, waterspouts frequently appear in Phu Quoc, but this particular event was noted for its size and visibility. Observers described it as a striking spectacle against the backdrop of the sea, with its color varying from black to white depending on what it picked up along its path.
