Massive Protests Erupt Across Serbia Over Corruption And Government Accountability

Citizens across Serbia unite to demand justice following deadly railway station collapse amid growing discontent.

Belgrade witnessed the largest protest in modern Serbian history over the weekend of March 15-16, 2025, as thousands of citizens took to the streets to voice their anger against systemic corruption and demand accountability from their government. Despite efforts by authorities to disrupt the demonstrations, including halting public transportation, the protests drew significant participation from across society, illustrating widespread frustration.

The protest was ignited by the tragic collapse of the canopy at the Novi Sad railway station last November, which resulted in the deaths of 15 people. It began as a student-led movement, with university protests starting three months prior and gaining momentum as various professions came out to support the cause. From farmers arriving on tractors to healthcare workers and IT professionals, the protests showcased unity across different sectors.

According to police estimates, peak attendance reached 107,000, but the Arhiv javnih skupova, an NGO monitoring mass gatherings, suggested turnout may have been as high as 325,000 participants. A young man, one of the many demonstrators, expressed the sentiment shared by many: 99I came for my child, for my son, so his future can bebetter,99 (reported by DW).

Despite the peaceful nature of the majority of protests, reports indicate heightened tensions and confrontations with police. The Interior Ministry acknowledged 22 arrests and 56 injuries, largely stemming from attempts by some protesters to engage provocatively with pro-government counterprotesters, who dubbed themselves 99Students 2.0.99 These counterprotesters also organized around key government buildings and were guarded by tractors and police. Rumors swirled about their ties to violent groups, heightening fears of potential clashes.

The most intense moments occurred during the silent tribute for the victims of the Nov Sad tragedy when unexpected loud noises caused panic within the crowd. Eyewitness accounts described the frightening scene, with one individual, Du61an Simin, stating, 99We couldn99t run away from it 99 you don99t know if something will fall on your head or hit you from the side.99 Citizens scattered amid confusion, some suffering minor injuries as people trampled each other to escape the noise, leading to inquiries about its source.

Military analysts like Aleksandar Radic raised concerns about the use of potential acoustic weapons, claiming, 99The authorities have had a sound cannon for years.99 Although Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic swiftly denied these allegations, calling them 99lies,99 he suggested the noise might have been caused by anti-drone equipment. Despite government denials, international media have noted significant inconsistencies surrounding these claims, leading to calls for accountability.

On March 17, Vucic acknowledged the protests, emphasizing the need for change within his government due to the overwhelming turnout. 99All people in power must understand the message when such a large number of people gather,99 he stated. Yet, his dismissal of allegations surrounding the acoustic weapon drew skepticism as the atmosphere of unrest continued unabated. Political analyst Dusan Spasojevic remarked on the lack of apparent political direction within the protest, indicating the movement faces uncertainty about its future course.

Critics also noted the absence of concrete strategies among protesters following substantial public engagement. 99It's clear students aren't sure how to intensify the protest from here,99 Spasojevic noted. The movement's next steps remain ambiguous, but the collective spirit among participants has reportedly begun reflecting a shift toward greater political awareness and involvement.

Vucic's administration has felt the pressure of the protests, and the extent of participation — not only from students but also from various layers of society — intends to reflect the broader discontent. Analysts caution, though, about the potential for the government to counteract consolidative movements with concessions but resist genuine change.

Serbia is currently experiencing significant unrest, which has emerged as the biggest challenge for Vucic, who has held power for over thirteen years. Prominent media voices, including Noje cirher caitung, observe the challenge posed by this unified citizenry calling for enduring change.

It remains uncertain how and whether the protest movement can sustain itself and whether Vucic's government will alter its course or face increasing pressure. If demonstrated to have employed force against its own populace, these protests could embolden calls for accountability and reshape the political climate. Observers agree, 99That's the kind of unnecessary overreach which fuels protests.99

The movement persists, agitated by both recent events and the government's response. While the protestors left some feeling disappointed, it also left many angrier, seeking justice for the victims and calling for governmental reforms. How the authorities respond moving forward will undoubtedly dictate the future of civic engagement, democracy, and governance within Serbia.
