Massive Fire Engulfs Action Supermarket In Blankenfelde

Authorities suspect arson as firefighters battle flames into the evening hours.

A significant fire broke out on March 21, 2025, in Blankenfelde-Mahlow, Germany, specifically at an 'Action' supermarket located on Carl-von-Ossietzky-Street. The fire engulfed the one-story building, leading local firefighters into a massive operation that mobilized around 100 personnel and 19 emergency vehicles, including two turntable ladders and an ambulance. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, as approximately 40 individuals inside the supermarket had been able to evacuate safely before the flames took hold.

The fire was reported just before 17:00, with firefighting teams arriving shortly after 16:50. According to reports, the building was “completely ablaze,” and firefighters faced challenges due to the risk of collapse. "We are unable to enter the building due to the risk of collapse," stated Dirk Wittstock, the fire chief at the scene. The fire was brought under control after about 45 minutes of relentless effort, but the complex extinguishing operations continued into the late evening.

As the firefighters battled the blaze, local police began an investigation into the cause of the fire. Initial findings suggest the possibility of arson, as indicated by Ulf Reichelt, the police chief in Teltow-Fläming, who said, “There is suspicion of arson.” In connection with these investigations, two suspects were reportedly arrested.

Amid the firefighting efforts, local authorities issued public safety warnings regarding the heavy smoke developing from the fire, which was visible from several kilometers away. Residents in the vicinity were advised to keep windows and doors closed and to turn off ventilation systems due to the oppressive odor and smoke hazard. “We have to ensure that our emergency services can operate without overwhelming the system,” officials mentioned.

Firefighting resources were complete with ground crews working alongside aerial units to effectively combat the raging flames fueled by the items stored within the supermarket, including combustible materials. Due to the extensive damage, which is believed to total around one million euros for property damage with an additional 300,000 euros in lost goods, the local fire brigade highlighted the necessity of having heavy machinery available to assist in tackling such large incidents.

The aftermath of the fire saw the supermarket's roof completely collapsed, adding to the urgency of the operation, as teams worked diligently to secure the site. Fire Chief Dirk Wittstock noted the need for continuous efforts, as he forecasted, "The firefighting will take several hours." Residents nearby were reminded to keep emergency lines clear, following a notice that the fire teams were still actively engaged in extinguishing operations.

As the fire continued into the evening, the community kept watch over the situation, with authorities appealing for any witnesses who might have seen any irregular activities around the market before the fire erupted. “We are looking for any witnesses who may have seen something related to this event; we appreciate any assistance,” Police stated as the investigation unfolded.

This incident serves to highlight both the risks associated with large-scale fires and the dedicated response from local emergency services. With the circumstances surrounding the cause of the blaze still unclear, this incident opens discussions about safety practices in public spaces, particularly concerning crowd management and vigilant monitoring to prevent such calamities from repeating.

The community remains vigilant and supportive of the teams who worked tirelessly to contain the fire, reflecting the resilience and cooperative spirit of those affected. As investigations continue, additional updates will follow as more information becomes available regarding the cause of this inexplicable disaster.
