Marvin Wijks, Former Footballer, Dies At 40

The beloved athlete passes away after suffering from a brain hemorrhage, leaving behind a grieving family and community.

Marvin Wijks, the former professional footballer known for his time with clubs like HFC Haarlem and FC Emmen, has passed away at the young age of 40 due to complications stemming from a brain hemorrhage. His death, confirmed on February 27, 2025, marked the end of what many described as the life of a spirited athlete.

Wijks suffered the brain hemorrhage three days earlier, on February 24. After receiving urgent medical care and being hospitalized, his family's heartbreaking decision to take him off life support on Thursday led to his untimely passing. ``The feeling of helplessness is great,`` stated RVC Celeritas, the Rijswijk club where Wijks contributed significant volunteer work after his active playing career.

The Rijswijk-based club expressed its condolences, noting the overwhelming sense of loss felt within the community. ``Many questions arise, questions we cannot answer and will never know,`` the message continued, clearly highlighting the emotional impact of Wijks' death on his former teammates and friends.

During his active years, Wijks was renowned as a dynamic wing attacker. He played over 100 matches for HFC Haarlem from 2006 to 2010, scoring 16 goals and contributing significantly to the team. A well-loved player, he was also remembered fondly by those at FC Emmen and various amateur clubs, including VVSB and Rijnsburgse Boys.

Jaco Heemskerk, team manager at Rijnsburgse Boys, remembered Wijks as always bringing joy to the team, saying, ``Marvin was always the center of joy and came with a smile. His professional attitude and enthusiasm greatly impacted everyone around him.`` He emphasized the personal loss to the team as they deal with the void left by Wijks.

Before joining Haarlem, Wijks made his professional debut with Sparta Rotterdam. He started with the club's youth academy and marked his brief presence at the Eredivisie level with only one match appearance before moving to Haarlem, where he flourished for four seasons.

After his tenure at Haarlem, Wijks faced challenges when the club went bankrupt in 2010. His career path then took him to Germany, where he played for 1. FC Magdeburg and Germania Halberstadt, and later returned to Holland with FC Emmen, where he played consistently.

Despite the professional struggles, Wijks' positive energy always shone brightly on and off the pitch. His final playing years were spent at Rijnsburgse Boys, and after retiring, he dedicated himself to local football development, including coaching children, especially those with autism.

Tragedy struck not only for his fans and fellow players but also for his family. Wijks leaves behind his wife and three children, strengthening the grief felt by many. Notably, two of his children are already following their father's athletic footsteps, with one son training at Bayern Munich’s academy and the other representing Sparta Rotterdam’s U16 team.

The loss has reverberated throughout the football community, significantly at RVC Celeritas, which planned to wear black armbands during their next match against HPSV as a mark of respect for Wijks.

His legacy goes beyond the pitch—his commitment to supporting youth programs and local clubs will be remembered by those who participated. Marvin Wijks’ unexpected passing at such a young age serves as a stark reminder of how fragile life is and the impactful role one individual can have within their community.

This news has left not only his immediate family but also friends and fans questioning how someone so full of life could be taken away so suddenly. The grieving process for his passing will certainly resonate for years to come, as those affected seek answers and perhaps closure through remembrance and honor of his life and legacy.
