Marvel Rivals Season 1 Set For Launch With Major Balance Changes

NetEase unveils patch notes as Fantastic Four join the fray, enhancing gameplay experience.

The excitement among fans of Marvel Rivals is palpable as the first season, titled Eternal Night Falls, is set to launch on January 10, 2025. This season will introduce beloved characters from the Fantastic Four, including Mister Fantastic and the Invisible Woman, alongside dramatic content changes and balance adjustments aimed at enhancing gameplay.

For players eager to embrace new strategies, NetEase has unveiled substantial patch notes detailing character buffs and nerfs, optimizing the roster for competitive play. The focus on balancing is significant, with adjustments impacting approximately two-thirds of the playable characters, reflecting player feedback and the competitive nature of the game.

Balance adjustments are particularly evident among several key heroes. The fan-favorite character Hawkeye will experience reductions to his long-range damage capabilities. Adjustments include slight reductions to the spread angle of his Blast Arrows and the triggering distance of his passive ability, Archer’s Focus, shifting from 60 meters to 40 meters.

Hela, another character facing scrutiny for her effectiveness, is getting her base health reduced from 275 to 250 to address her dominating presence. On the other hand, characters like Black Widow, Magik, and Storm are set to benefit from buffs. Black Widow's abilities are receiving optimizations, with the range of her Edge Dancer ability increased and cooldown times reduced for her skill set. Similarly, Storm, who has previously been considered less impactful, will see enhancements such as increased projectile speed and damage.

The adjustments continuing within the game also affect key team-up abilities. Hawkeye and Black Widow’s combined team-up power will see their seasonal bonus decrease from 20% to 15%, similarly with Hela, Thor, and Loki’s team-up. This aims to reduce the overwhelming power of players utilizing these combinations effectively.

Other character adjustments include buffs to Winter Soldier and Wolverine, where the former will now have increased base health and improved damage outputs from his skills. Captain America will see enhancements allowing him to sustain longer fights due to his increased health and reduced cooldowns on his abilities.

Storm’s changes are particularly significant, as her Wind Blade's projectile speed has ramped up from 100 m/s to 150 m/s, accompanied by increased damage on her Bolt Rush ability. The developer aims to create balance not just by giving reductions, but augmenting characters perceived as under-classed until now. For example, each time Storm activates her ultimate ability, the additional health bonus will gently decrease over time, rather than vanishing instantly, giving players more strategic longevity in battles.

Some unexpected changes include adjustments to Namor’s throwing mechanics, where the ability to accurately place his Monstro Spawn and Frozen Spawn has been enhanced to allow for tactical improvements during gameplay.

The patch notes also detail certain nerfs focused on performance capabilities of characters like Mantis, where her passive movement boost will now be reduced from 2.5m/s to 1.5m/s, addressing her utility as support. Additional specific changes affect Rocket Raccoon, who will now enjoy increased healing capabilities within his Repair Mode.

With the upcoming patch bringing new content and balance changes to the Marvel Rivals universe, players are reminded of the importance of adaptability to familiarize themselves with their character modifications. The reviews have noted these changes are aligned with the community’s need for versatility and refinement within the competitive sphere of Marvel Rivals.
