Maruti Suzuki Unveils Jimny 5-Door Model For Japan

The iconic off-roader expands its reach as part of Maruti's global growth strategy.

Maruti Suzuki has officially launched the Jimny 5-Door model, debuting this versatile vehicle for export to Japan. The new Jimny, manufactured exclusively at the company's facility in Gurugram, India, marks a significant addition to Maruti's portfolio and showcases the brand's commitment to meeting global demand.

With over 3.5 million units sold worldwide, the Jimny has long been recognized as a quintessential off-roader, earning its fans across numerous markets including Australia, Mexico, and South Africa. Now, the introduction of the 5-Door variant is aimed at catering to the needs of Japanese consumers, who are familiar with the famed three-door model already available on their roads.

According to Suzuki’s announcement, the Jimny 5-Door will come equipped with enhanced seating capacity, making it easier to accommodate families and groups, thanks to its extended wheelbase and increased trunk space. This model maintains the iconic Jimny’s off-road capabilities, providing rugged performance combined with the utility of additional doors.

Speaking on the occasion of the launch, Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, stated, "The introduction of ‘Made in India’ Jimny 5-door in Japan is a testimony to the global level of excellence in our manufacturing capability.” This statement reflects Maruti's pride not only in its products but also in its 'Make-in-India' initiative.

The Jimny 5-Door was showcased for the first time during the Auto Expo 2023 held in India, signaling Maruti Suzuki’s strategic focus on enhancing its global footprint. With India's thriving automotive manufacturing sector, the 5-Door Jimny is set to support Maruti's goal to export vehicles to nearly 100 countries.

Further enhancing its appeal, the Jimny 5-Door features new color options, which include Sizzling Red Metallic and Celestial Blue Pearl Metallic. These variations not only add aesthetic diversity but also attract consumers who appreciate personalization. It's anticipated to rival higher-end vehicles like the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen at more economical prices.

At approximately 2,651,000 yen (around $25,000), the Jimny 5-Door positions itself favorably against luxury brands, allowing it to reach wider market segments. Many potential buyers are already vocal about their enthusiasm, touting its price-performance ratio as unbeatable, especially when compared to pricier SUVs available locally.

The manufacturing process at the Gurugram facility, which follows stringent quality standards, plays a pivotal role. Maruti Suzuki has long been India's top passenger vehicle exporter, having shipped over 3.23 lakh vehicles to various markets within the year. The company holds a remarkable 43.5% share of India's total passenger vehicle exports, indicating its prominence and operational agility.

With the growing interest around the Jimny and its recent launch, Maruti Suzuki also has future plans for other variants, including possible electric models, though details remain unconfirmed. Such innovations would position the Jimny as not just traditional automotive transport but also align it with current market trends favoring sustainability.

The introduction of the Jimny 5-Door encompasses more than just another model; it embodies Maruti Suzuki’s vision for expansion and response to market demands. Having already made waves internationally, this vehicle stands to cultivate lasting relationships with new customers, especially within Suzuki's homeland of Japan.

With this launch, Maruti Suzuki is well-poised to leverage its established global stature and manufacturing capabilities, ensuring the Jimny remains not just relevant but a leader within the off-roading segment. Enthusiasts and prospective buyers alike are eager to see how the iconic Jimny will perform on Japanese roads, heralding another success chapter for Maruti Suzuki's remarkable all-terrain vehicle.
