Marseille Eyes Paul Pogba And Valentin Carboni This Transfer Window

Roberto De Zerbi hints at signing the former Juventus star and bringing back the Inter Milan midfielder.

Marseille coach Roberto De Zerbi has recently hinted at the possibility of signing Paul Pogba, reflecting his openness to reinforcing the team with what he calls "champions." This speculation arises as the French midfielder finds himself without a club following the termination of his contract with Juventus, which left many wondering where the World Cup winner would land next.

Pogba, who has served his time through suspension, is facing uncertainty about his future, especially following his 18-month doping ban, which was reduced from four years. The 30-year-old is preparing to resume training, allowing for his return to competitive play as early as March or April. Interestingly, Pogba is yet to make his mark on Ligue 1, even though he was born just outside Paris—a potential career opportunity with Marseille could certainly change this narrative.

During recent press interactions, De Zerbi expressed his admiration for the former Manchester United star. "Pogba? It’s not a problem for me. I always find a place for such champions in the team. He is a top player, and he can cause a lot of problems for opponents," he stated, showcasing his willingness to accommodate high-caliber players. Despite this excitement, the coach mentioned they have not yet engaged in formal discussions concerning Pogba's potential arrival, which may cast doubt on the immediacy of such speculation.

With Marseille currently sitting second in the Ligue 1 standings, trailing Paris Saint-Germain by ten points, strengthening the squad appears necessary for their ambitions. De Zerbi has stressed the importance of addressing the team's needs come January, especially as they see opportunities for bolstering their line-up to increase their competitive edge.

Alongside the speculation about Pogba, another name making headlines is 19-year-old Valentin Carboni, currently on the mend from a torn ACL he sustained during international duty with Argentina. The Inter Milan midfielder had been on loan at Marseille prior to his injury, enjoying the support of the French club as he aimed to kickstart his career.

Reports indicate Carboni could make his recovery by April or May 2024, providing Inter with decisions about his future. Sources indicate the Italian club may opt to loan him back to Marseille once he is fit. Even though Carboni's injury has delayed his momentum, there remains mutual interest from both clubs to see the Argentine return to Marseille. The French team may hold the purchase option worth over €40 million, but Inter can execute their buyback option as well. This certainly makes for intriguing dynamics as the transfer window approaches.

De Zerbi's comments on Pogba and Carboni both highlight the need for champions and quality players within the squad. "I would like to have only champions on my team... if champions arrive, we will try to find space and make sure they can live together," he stated, reaffirming his commitment to maintaining competitiveness and camaraderie among players.

With the January transfer window fast approaching, time is of the essence for Marseille. The team must evaluate their approach to these potential signings and look for necessary reinforcements to march on with their Ligue 1 campaign. Fans are left wondering if these speculations will turn to reality, as both Pogba's and Carboni's futures are linked intricately with Marseille's ambitions.

Many hope for the arrival of players who not only uplift the squad's morale but who also bring high levels of performance to the pitch. Whether it is Pogba, Carboni, or other potential candidates, Marseille's future could hinge on the success of their endeavors during this key transfer period.
