Marozsán Fábián Reaches First ATP Semi-Final In Munich

The Hungarian player overcomes Zizou Bergs to set up clash with Alexander Zverev

In a thrilling display of skill and tenacity, Marozsán Fábián, currently ranked 77th in the world, has advanced to his first ATP semi-final at the Munich clay court tournament. He achieved this milestone by defeating Belgium's Zizou Bergs, who is ranked 50th, with a score of 6:3, 7:6 (7-4) in a match that showcased both players' abilities and determination.

Marozsán started the quarter-final match on a high note, breaking Bergs' serve early and racing to a 3:0 lead. The Hungarian player showcased his aggressive style, and after just 32 minutes, he secured the first set 6:3. However, the second set proved to be a different challenge as Bergs improved his performance, taking advantage of a break point in the fourth game to lead 3:1.

Despite this setback, Marozsán quickly responded, breaking back immediately and leveling the match once again. The tension escalated as both players held their serves, leading to a tie-break. At one point, it seemed Bergs would take control, leading 4-1 in the tie-break. Yet, Marozsán demonstrated remarkable resilience, winning six consecutive points to clinch the tie-break and the match.

With this victory, Marozsán has set the stage for a highly anticipated semi-final clash against Alexander Zverev, the tournament's top seed and the world’s third-ranked player. Zverev, a two-time world champion and Olympic gold medalist, presents a formidable challenge for the Hungarian. The match is scheduled for Saturday afternoon, April 20, 2025, at 3 PM.

Reflecting on his journey, Marozsán expressed his excitement about reaching his first ATP semi-final, stating, “After seven quarter-finals, it’s a big moment for me, and I’m very happy. The last time I played Zizou, the conditions were faster in Monaco, but today the court was slow and the weather cold, which made it challenging, especially in long rallies. Tomorrow, a world-class opponent awaits me, but of course, I will try to beat him too.”

Prior to facing Bergs, Marozsán had a successful run in the tournament, defeating fourth-seeded Ugo Humbert (ranked 21st) in the previous round with a score of 6:4, 6:4. This victory was particularly significant as it marked the first time Marozsán had defeated Humbert, having lost their previous two encounters without winning a set.

The match against Humbert was not without its moments of confusion for Marozsán. After securing the match point, he initially did not realize the match was over and thought they were still playing at 5:3. It was only when the chair umpire informed him to shake hands at the net that he understood he had won.

The quarter-final match against Bergs was delayed due to Zverev's lengthy battle against Tallon Griekspoor, which lasted over three hours. As a result, Marozsán and Bergs were moved to another court to accommodate the schedule. The delay did not seem to affect Marozsán negatively, as he quickly established control in the first set.

As the match progressed, Bergs attempted to regain momentum, but Marozsán's quick response to break back after falling behind in the second set demonstrated his competitive spirit. The match concluded after 1 hour and 40 minutes of intense play, with Marozsán emerging victorious.

Looking ahead, the semi-final against Zverev presents a significant challenge. Marozsán faced Zverev once before, in the quarter-finals of last year's Miami Masters, where he lost in straight sets. However, the Hungarian is determined to put up a strong fight this time around.

“Tomorrow is a big match for me,” Marozsán remarked. “I know I have to bring my best game to compete against someone of Zverev’s caliber. I’m ready to give it my all.”

As fans eagerly await this exciting semi-final, Marozsán's journey in Munich has captured the attention of tennis enthusiasts. His impressive performance and growth as a player highlight the potential for future success on the ATP Tour.

With every match, Marozsán continues to build on his experience and skill, proving that he belongs among the top players in the world. His determination and resilience will undoubtedly be on full display as he prepares to challenge Zverev in what promises to be a memorable encounter.
