Markus Eisenbichler Announces Retirement From Ski Jumping

After over 20 years of competitive skiing, Eisenbichler will end his career at Planica, reflecting on his remarkable achievements.

Markus Eisenbichler, one of Germany's most celebrated ski jumpers, announced his retirement from competitive skiing on March 12, 2025, via his Instagram channel. He indicated he would end his sports career at the World Cup final held at Planica, Slovenia, from March 28 to 30, 2025. Eisenbichler, who expressed mixed emotions about his decision, reflected, "It feels good to know this is the right time." Planica holds special significance for him, as it is where he celebrated his first individual World Cup victory and set the German distance record of 248 meters.

With six World Championship titles under his belt, Eisenbichler is recognized as the most successful ski jumper in German history. He achieved this remarkable feat through his consistency and talent on the circuit. He won individual gold at the World Championships held in Seefeld, Austria, in 2019, and collectively brought home numerous team medals throughout his career, including Olympic bronze with the German team during the Beijing 2022 Olympics.

Despite his achievements, the past few years have been fraught with challenges. After making his World Cup debut during the 2011-2012 season, Eisenbichler faced difficult periods, including being removed from the World Cup selection due to performance issues. He explained, "The last few months have involved much reflection, and my gut feeling says: It’s the right timing to step away." His sentiments resonate with many athletes who struggle to maintain peak performance amid personal and professional adversities.

While Eisenbichler's performances have varied over the years, with struggles particularly noted during the past season, he is proud of having lived his dream and is grateful for the opportunities presented to him. He mentioned, "Ski jumping was my life – with highs and lows, with emotions I can hardly express. I had incredible successes: world titles, World Cup victories, medals - accomplishments I could only dream of as a child."

He now looks forward to new challenges and experiences beyond the ski jumping circuit. "I’m excited for what is to come: new challenges, new experiences, and finally time for things I have not focused on as much," he stated. Eisenbichler's departure will be felt deeply within the ski jumping community, as he has been lauded for his open approach and willingness to engage with fans and fellow competitors alike.

Horst Httel, the sports director of the German Ski Association (DSV), commended Eisenbichler's immense contributions to the sport, stating, "With Markus Eisenbichler, one of the great ski jumpers is stepping away from the World Cup stage. The DSV is very thankful for his many years of passion, energy, and, of course, numerous successes." Httel also hinted at the possibility of Eisenbichler returning to the sport as a coach, expressing hope for continued collaboration within the ski jumping community.

Eisenbichler's final moments on the ski jumping stage will take place amid the excitement of Planica, where he has experienced considerable success. He aims to relish every moment of his final performance, stating, "It’s going to be emotional." His claim to fame as the holder of the German ski flying record is significant, as he represented not just himself but also the German ski jumping team on countless platforms.

With three podium finishes at World Cups and countless memories, the ski jumping legend bids farewell not just to his career but to the life he has known for over two decades.

On March 12, Eisenbichler shared, "I have lived my dream and am immensely thankful. But I also look forward to what is yet to come: new challenges, new experiences..." His heartfelt closure resonates with many athletes; few find success akin to Eisenbichler’s, highlighting the highs and lows intertwined within any athletic career.

For Germany’s ski jumping community, Eisenbichler will forever remain a prominent figure, celebrated not only for his record-breaking achievements but also for his genuine persona and love for the sport of ski jumping. His legacy will undoubtedly serve as inspiration for future generations of athletes.
