Markus Eisenbichler Announces Retirement After Triumphs

The six-time world champion prepares for his emotional farewell at the World Cup final in Planica.

Markus Eisenbichler, one of Germany's most celebrated ski jumpers, has announced his retirement after the upcoming World Cup final in Planica, Slovenia, scheduled from March 28 to March 30, 2025. "Skispringen war mein Leben – mit Höhen und Tiefen, mit Emotionen, die kaum in Worte zu fassen sind. Ich habe meinen Traum gelebt und bin unendlich dankbar. Aber ich freue mich auch auf das, was kommt: neue Herausforderungen, neue Erlebnisse und endlich Zeit für Dinge, die bisher etwas zu kurz gekommen sind," said Eisenbichler, reflecting on his two-decade career at the German Ski Association's press conference following his announcement on March 12, 2025.

The 33-year-old from Siegsdorf is especially nostalgic about Planica, as it is here where he first tasted World Cup success, marking the beginning of his illustrious career with his first victory. He also set the German distance record of 248 meters at the same location, solidifying it as a significant venue for him. Eisenbichler's career has been remarkable, comprising six World Championship titles, with his standout victories occurring at the 2019 World Championships held in Innsbruck and Seefeld, where he captured gold. He also earned individual gold and multiple team victories, alongside his Olympic bronze medal with the team at the 2022 Beijing Games.

Despite his past success, recent years have not been as kind to the ski jumping star. He encountered various challenges, including injuries and underwhelming performances, leading to missed competitions such as the World Championships held recently in Trondheim. "Ich habe viel darüber nachgedacht, und mein Bauchgefühl sagt mir: Es ist der richtige Zeitpunkt. Es fühlt sich gut an," he added, quoting his gut instinct about stepping away from competitive skiing. This decision follows struggles to maintain his performance level and culminates after being removed from the World Cup team earlier this season. His absence from the elite group has certainly been disheartening for the athlete once revered as the face of German ski jumping.

Hailing from Bavaria, Eisenbichler's rise traces back to his debut during the 2011/12 season as part of the DSV squad, where he quickly established himself as a proficient athlete driving the team's success. Horst Hüttel, the DSV Sport Director, acknowledged Eisenbichler's contributions and emotional connection to the sport, affirming the depth of gratitude the skiing community feels for his many years of excellence: "Mit Markus Eisenbichler verlässt einer der ganz großen Skispringer die Weltcup-Bühne. Der DSV ist Markus für seine vielen Jahre an Leidenschaft, Energie und vielen, vielen Erfolgen sehr dankbar."

Looking forward, Eisenbichler has hinted at pursuing new adventures, noting the excitement around upcoming challenges and the chance to dedicate time to areas of life he hasn't prioritized during his rigorous skiing career. He envisions possibly transitioning to coaching to stay connected to the sport he loves. Numerously celebrated and deeply respected among fans and colleagues alike, Eisenbichler's ability to engage openly about his struggles has endeared him to many within the ski jumping community.

With the World Cup finale approaching, emotions are heightened as Eisenbichler prepares to take the stage one last time. The anticipation builds, knowing he will perform at one of the most cherished venues of his career. "Hier ist Bayern: Der BR24 Newsletter informiert Sie immer montags bis freitags über das Wichtigste vom Tag – kompakt und direkt. Hier geht’s zur Anmeldung!" This event promises to be not only significant for Eisenbichler personally but also for his many supporters who have watched him soar through the peaks and valleys of ski jumping.

Markus Eisenbichler's departure from the competitive scene marks the closing of one chapter and the potential opening of another, as he expresses gratitude for the experiences gained and enthusiasm for where life's path may lead next. His legacy, built on record-breaking feats and Olympic glory, reminds aspiring athletes of the dedication and passion needed to succeed. From celebrated triumphs to dealing with personal challenges, Eisenbichler’s story encapsulates the spirit of resilience and determination, characteristics widely admired across the sporting world.
