The iconic Marktrock Festival is set to make its much-anticipated return to Leuven on August 23, 2025, marking two decades since the last event was held. The festival, which was founded by Jokke Kerkhofs, aims to celebrate not only his legacy but also the vibrant music history of Leuven.
During the Warmste Week, Kat Kerkhofs and her sister Lyn announced this significant comeback, igniting excitement among festival-goers and the local community. Kat, who has been living abroad for 13 years, expressed her strong connection to her hometown, stating, "We have never lost our connection with the city. Leuven is much more than just a student city; it boasts a rich musical history we must cherish.”
For the Kerkhofs sisters, this revival is deeply personal. Jokke, their father, co-founded Marktrock back in 1982 and passed away unexpectedly from a heart aneurysm two decades ago. His sudden death left them grappling with loss, as Kat shared, "His passing was so sudden we couldn't even say goodbye. Losing such a central figure at a young age definitely shakes you."
The return of Marktrock is not just about nostalgia but also about community. Kat revealed how the idea of resurrecting the festival evolved: "I approached Mayor Mo Ridouani with my plans, and the city of Leuven quickly showed its support, even granting us official permission to organize the event." The enthusiasm from local residents has been palpable, with many eager to assist with the festival's organization. "What a beautiful initiative to pay tribute to your father," one resident remarked, reflecting the community spirit surrounding this event.
Scheduled for August 23, 2025, the festival will take place at Leuven’s Oude Markt, known for being the heart and soul of the city. Kat promised a diverse line-up catering to both long-time fans of Marktrock and younger music lovers. Encouragingly, she said, "How cool would it be to stand on Marktrock with my son Ciro?" illustrating her hopes to create lasting memories for future generations.
The vision for Marktrock 2025 encompasses not just musical performances but also a celebration of the cultural significance of Leuven. It is expected to showcase noteworthy artists spanning various genres, ensuring there’s something for everyone. Kat reflected, "We want to bring it all back as a tribute to our dad Jokke, Leuven, and life. The Oude Markt is such a special place for many people, and we aim to honor its legacy with this event."
Kat's commitment to the festival is unwavering, stating, "I do everything from A to Z; it’s absolutely not easy, but I have incredible support from Leuvenement vzw, who also organizes 'Het Groot Verlof,' and from Mike Naert of Het Depot." Lyn will step in as stage manager during the festival, solidifying the familial bond underpinning the event.
The announcement of Marktrock’s return has stirred excitement throughout Leuven, with many community members expressing their willingness to lend their support. "Success with the organization; surely the whole of Leuven will assist you with advice and hands-on help," voiced one supporter, characterizing the spirit of collaboration fostering this revival.
With the wheels already set for this ambitious project, the sisters are laying the groundwork to transform their vision of Marktrock 2025 from concept to reality. The festival's return is not merely about music; it's about reconnecting with roots, honoring family, and celebrating community spirit.
This upcoming Marktrock is anticipated to be more than just another music event; it promises to be a heartfelt tribute woven tightly with the fabric of Leuven's identity and legacy. It's set to resonate with the memories of past generations and create new ones for the future.
