Mark Williams Celebrates Champion Of Champions Triumph

Veteran Snooker Star Takes Title and Shakes Off Criticism from Stephen Hendry

Mark Williams has claimed his first Champion of Champions title after defeating Xiao Guodong of China 10-6 at the Toughsheet Community Stadium on November 17, 2024. At 49, the Welshman showcased the skill and composure he is known for, pushing through early struggles and finishing the final with impressive breaks.

The match didn't start off promisingly for Xiao, who quickly found himself down 4-0 as Williams capitalized on early mistakes, including missed safety shots. Williams built up his lead with breaks of 91 and 77, asserting his dominance throughout the match.

Just when it seemed like Williams might completely run away with it, Xiao found his rhythm, launching a comeback and narrowing the gap to 5-4. He produced the first century break of the match and added several significant breaks to put pressure on Williams. Despite the tight moment, Williams responded with his own astonishing break of 112.

After the match, Williams expressed his disbelief at still being able to compete at such high levels, stating, "I can't believe I am still winning tournaments at my age. Winning this event today honestly feels unbelievable." He also congratulated Xiao for being a strong competitor throughout the tournament.

Previous to this match, the title had eluded Williams throughout his illustrious snooker career, which includes three world championship titles. His win came at the end of what many might have viewed as a challenging season, but victory at the Champion of Champions could very well signify the resurgence of the veteran star.

Mark Williams' victory was also underscored by his cheeky comments directed at fellow snooker legend Stephen Hendry, who had criticized his decision to change cues mid-season. Williams quipped, "I’ve been getting slated by a lot of people for changing cues, I’m not going to mention any names, Hendry, but it’s starting to come alright now and all of a sudden the cue is the best thing I’ve ever had in my hands." This light-hearted swipe reflects the camaraderie within the competitive snooker circuit.

Hendry, who has been regarded as one of snooker's greatest, himself praised Williams post-match, declaring him his "hero" for continuing to perform at such high levels near 50 years of age. He acknowledged their close friendship and the respect they have for each other's careers.

"He's my hero, I have to say. I have to say it. He's my best mate on the tour," Hendry said during his commentary. His remarks highlight the respect garnered among snooker peers and the camaraderie that's often seen off the table.

After the match, Williams made it clear he has no intentions of retiring anytime soon. "What a feeling. I can't really believe it. I'm going to keep playing until I fall off the tour, whenever that's going to be. Winning's obviously good but if I lose, I don’t worry about it, just try your best," he commented.

The Champion of Champions concluded with positive crowd attendance throughout the sessions and concluded on high notes with Williams as the victor. This title not only adds to his long-list of accolades but could potentially reignite his career as he heads toward the UK Championship next week.

Williams emphasized how much the cheers of the crowd motivate him: "The older I'm getting, the more support I’m getting. Perhaps they always support the underdog. It’s nice and I think it’s helping me play. I’m sticking at it and keeping my head up. Whenever I'm on the table, I'm just enjoying it."

His victory at Bolton could serve as inspiration, showcasing not only the love for the game but also the belief and tenacity required to realize victory. With Williams' continuous dedication and with legends like Hendry cheering him on, this victory might not be the last we see of the Welsh Potting Machine making headlines on the snooker circuit.

Looking forward, fans and players alike are eager to see how Williams will continue to evolve as he remains committed to competing. His persistence attests to the beauty of sports—whether young or old, it is the passion for the game and the relentless drive for success that's truly admirable and continually motivating for future generations.
