Mariners Claim Leody Taveras Off Waivers From Rangers

Seattle bolsters outfield with Taveras while designating Castillo for assignment

The Seattle Mariners have made a significant move in their roster by claiming outfielder Leody Taveras off waivers from the Texas Rangers. This acquisition comes as the Mariners also reinstated utility player Dylan Moore from the injured list, optioned Samad Taylor to Triple-A Tacoma, and designated right-hander Luis F. Castillo for assignment.

Leody Taveras, 26, has spent the first six years of his Major League Baseball career with the Texas Rangers. He was a key player in the Rangers' successful 2023 World Series campaign, starting all five games in center field during the team's championship run against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Despite his contributions, Taveras was placed on outright waivers after the Rangers' game against the Mariners on May 4, 2025.

During the 2025 season, Taveras appeared in 30 games with the Rangers, where he posted a batting average of .241, hitting one home run, driving in eight RBIs, and successfully stealing six bases. Over his career, Taveras has maintained a .240 batting average, with 39 home runs, 168 RBIs, and 72 stolen bases since making his MLB debut in 2020. The Mariners will take on the estimated $3.25 million remaining on Taveras's one-year contract.

In addition to Taveras's acquisition, the Mariners have welcomed back Dylan Moore, who had been sidelined since April 25 due to right hip inflammation. Before his injury, Moore was enjoying a strong season, batting .286 with six home runs and nine RBIs. He has been a versatile player for Seattle, having started at multiple positions including second base, shortstop, third base, and right field.

Meanwhile, Samad Taylor, who played in four games for the Mariners this season, has been optioned to Triple-A Tacoma after going 1-for-8 at the plate. The Mariners' decision to designate Luis F. Castillo for assignment follows his two starts this season, where he struggled with a 7.71 ERA, recording seven walks and five strikeouts. Castillo had not pitched in the big leagues since 2022 with the Detroit Tigers.

On the other side of the transaction, the Texas Rangers have recalled outfielder Evan Carter from Triple-A Round Rock to fill the void left by Taveras. Carter, who had been recovering from injuries that limited his playing time last season, had a solid stint in the minors, hitting .221 with three home runs and nine RBIs in 21 games. He previously made headlines during the 2023 postseason, where he reached base in all 17 games and set a record with nine doubles.

As the Mariners continue to adjust their roster, the addition of Taveras could provide a much-needed boost to their outfield depth. His experience and playoff pedigree from last season could be invaluable as Seattle aims to improve its standing in the competitive American League West.

With Taveras now in the fold, the Mariners have a promising opportunity to enhance their offensive capabilities and solidify their defense in center field. The team is hopeful that Taveras can replicate his previous success and contribute significantly as they navigate the remainder of the season.

As the Mariners prepare for their upcoming games, all eyes will be on Taveras to see how he adapts to his new team and what impact he will have on their performance. Meanwhile, the Rangers will look to make the most of their roster adjustments as they continue their pursuit of success in the American League.
