Marina Ishikawa Crowned Miss Japan 2025 Grand Prix

The niece of renowned singer Sayuri Ishikawa earns top honors at prestigious national beauty contest.

On January 27, 2025, the prestigious Miss Japan Contest held its 57th edition at the Keio Plaza Hotel in Shinjuku, Tokyo, where Marina Ishikawa, a 19-year-old college student and actress, was crowned Grand Prix winner. This event, rich with history, aims to celebrate both inner and outer beauty among women and has previously launched the careers of notable figures like actress Norika Fujiwara and singer Sayuri Ishikawa, who is Marina's aunt.

This year's contest featured 12 finalists who showcased their talents through rounds of kimono, evening gown, and sportswear presentations. Following her captivating performances, Marina not only clinched the Grand Prix but also earned the title of Miss Kimono, along with a prize of 1 million yen.

Upon receiving the coveted crown, Marina was overwhelmed with emotion, stating, "I never thought I would win the Grand Prix; I’m so happy I can’t stop my tears. It felt like a dream, and the moment my name was called, I just couldn't hold back the tears." She reflected on her early feelings of inadequacy during the selection process, admitting, "When the training session first started, I struggled to express myself and envied the other finalists. I realized I had to put my best effort forward, especially during the self-promotion and Q&A segments.”

Marina's connection to the arts was heavily influenced by her aunt, who has achieved significant acclaim over her career. Growing up watching her perform created aspirations within Marina. "My aunt encouraged me to enjoy myself, saying, 'Be yourself and have fun.' She has been such a great source of support throughout my life,” she shared. Inspired by her role model, Marina decided to pursue her own path within the entertainment industry. "I aim to be an actress who becomes part of people's lives through my words and expressions. I hope to enter the world of singing if the opportunity arises; I really love singing," she added, hinting at her desire to explore other artistic avenues.

Other winners at the contest included Aya Takahashi, 21, who was crowned Miss Ocean Day, Kokoro Satsuka, 19, who took home the title of Miss Green Ambassador, and Miyu Takasaka, 21, who was awarded Miss Water Angel. The runners-up included Hanako Nagao, 20, from Tokai University, who secured the second runner-up position.

According to the organizers, the Miss Japan Contest celebrates "Japanese beauty" by emphasizing personality, elegance, and societal contribution. Since its inception in 1950, it has cultivated women who have thrived across various fields, including academia, healthcare, and politics.

Marina Ishikawa's win not only marks her personal achievement but also the continuation of her family legacy within show business. "From childhood, I admired actors like Masami Nagasawa. Watching them made me want to bring smiles to people through the same shining stage. I believe this desire has only grown stronger now," she expressed.

This year's results are not just about winning titles; they shed light on the necessity for female representation and empowerment, as highlighted by participants like Aya Takahashi, who addressed gender biases within educational systems and inspired the audience with her insights.

The Miss Japan Contest remains committed to highlighting the multifaceted beauty and potential of women, encouraging them to shine both onstage and off. Marina Ishikawa’s victory beautifully encapsulates this mission, setting the stage for her future endeavors as she steps forward as not merely the titleholder but also as a positive role model for young women across Japan.
