Marco Odermatt Celebrates 40th World Cup Victory

Swiss skiing star triumphs at Gröden as he overcomes competitors on legendary Saslong slope.

Marco Odermatt, the Swiss ski sensation, has once again solidified his status as the top competitor in alpine skiing by clinching his 40th World Cup victory on the iconic Saslong piste in Gröden, Italy, on December 21, 2024. The 27-year-old athlete's impressive performance not only marked his second win of the season but also underscored his dominance and experience on the slopes.

After newly taking the lead from his compatriot Franjo von Allmen, Odermatt delivered yet another outstanding run, finishing 0.45 seconds faster than von Allmen, who had set the initial best time as he challenged his rivals. "It means a lot to me. Val Gardena with the start at the very top is probably the race where I imagined winning to be the hardest," Odermatt expressed after the win, reflecting on the challenging nature of the race.

Ryan Cochran-Siegle from the United States rounded off the podium, finishing with just one hundredth of a second behind von Allmen, adding to the excitement of the competition, described as intense and full of tight times between the racers. Meanwhile, Romed Baumann of Germany achieved the seventh place, contributing to the excitement of the day with his own strong showing. His performance was particularly notable as he closed the gap behind the top six by only 0.53 seconds. "It’s always very tight at the podium here, but it’s really cool, I think it does the whole team good," Baumann commented, highlighting the competitive spirit at the World Cup events.

Gröden’s Saslong course, known for its unique combination of steep sections, challenging terrain, and pivotal turns, has always tested the limits of skiers. The race, which spans 3.4 kilometers, demands versatility and skill, making it popular among both competitors and fans alike. Odermatt acknowledged the unique challenges this track presented, especially at its upper portions, which are often less favorable to speed skiers. By targeting the Ciaslat-Wiese section of the course effectively, he was able to convert initial difficulties and capitalize on strengths to secure his lead.

Following his previous result of third place finish at the Super-G before this race, Odermatt now leads the overall World Cup standings. His continued success this season adds to his illustrious track record, having won the overall cup three times consecutively prior to this season. With three victories already registered this season, the question is often raised by fans and competitors alike: who can stop him?

While Odermatt wowed the crowds, his fellow teammates also stepped up, with newcomer Luis Vogt finishing solidly at 17th place. The 22-year-old’s performance saw him leverage higher bib numbers from improved course conditions, managing to break through the competitive field impressively. Simon Jocher also contributed to the effort with his 29th place finish, allowing him to secure World Cup points for the German team.

The day concluded with Odermatt’s joy evident as he celebrated his historic victory, reminiscing about the paths and challenges he has overcome. Recognized not only for his skill but also for his strategic mastery of the slopes, Odermatt remains the name to beat as the alpine skiing season continues to showcase thrilling talent and tight races. Stakeholders and commentators alike are left buzzing — the legend of Marco Odermatt only seems to grow.

This victory serves not simply as another win for Odermatt but is also emblematic of his career’s arc, filled with persistence and unparalleled excellence. His 40th victory is not just about numbers; it encapsulates the remarkable dedication and passion displayed on the slopes day after day, season after season. With more challenges and competitions on the horizon, one can only wonder what more this extraordinary athlete will achieve.
