March 2025 Offers Long Weekends For Workers And Students

With three 'megapuentes', Mexicans can enjoy time off for recreation and relaxation.

March 2025 is gearing up to be especially appealing for students and workers across Mexico, thanks to the occurrence of several long weekends known as "megapuentes." These periods provide the perfect opportunity for family gatherings, rest, and leisure activities, making it ideal for taking short vacations or simply relaxing at home.

The first megapuente this month extends from Saturday, March 15 through Monday, March 17, commemorated as the Natalicio de Benito Juárez. While this holiday officially falls on March 21, the Mexican Federal Labor Law (Ley Federal del Trabajo or LFT) shifts it to the third Monday of the month to create long weekends.

Following this, the second megapuente will take place from Friday, March 21 through Sunday, March 23. This break primarily affects students of basic education, who do not attend classes during this time due to their teachers' administrative tasks, such as entering grades. Though this is not considered mandatory time off for all workers, it’s prudent for employees to confirm with their employers if they will also have off on these dates.

The final megapuente will run from Friday, March 28 through Sunday, March 30. This break originates from the monthly meeting of the Consejo Técnico Escolar (CTE), where educators focus on educational strategies. On this date, students benefit from yet another long weekend.

With these megapuentes well-publicized, it’s recommended to plan activities or trips well in advance. This foresight allows holiday-goers to secure preferable accommodations and transportation options, mitigating last-minute price hikes. Exploring Mexico's diverse offerings—from its enchanting Pueblos Mágicos to its rich cultural sites—presents fantastic opportunities to make the most of these breaks. Events, fairs, and festivals are often organized during these periods, and checking local event listings could unearth exciting activities without needing to travel far.

Alternatively, those contemplating rest can find the perfect escape by enjoying simple pleasures like reading books, watching movies, or sharing quality family time. Notably, March 17 is designated as a mandatory day off for all workers, allowing everyone to rejuvenate without the pressure of work.

On the other hand, having days off on March 21 and 28 are not compulsory for workers. Therefore, it’s recommended for employees to consult their respective employers on whether those dates will involve work suspension.

During these off days, some services may operate on limited hours or might be closed. Checking the operational status of banks, stores, and other establishments beforehand can save unexpected frustration.

A number of people are especially excited for the upcoming Monday, March 17, 2025, when they can enjoy these long weekends. This excitement stems from the Ley Federal del Trabajo (LFT), which mandates obligatory rest days including the commemoration of Benito Juárez's birthday.

Article 74 of the LFT outlines these public holidays, stating, "The third Monday of March commemorates March 21, the Natalicio de Benito Juárez." If employees need to work on this mandated off-day, they receive additional payment: "If workers have to work on March 17, 2025, they will be entitled to receive, besides their ordinary pay, double pay for the services provided," according to standards set by the LFT.

This article is not just about time off, but also presents opportunities for rejuvenation and recreation for many. Now is the moment to take advantage of these well-earned breaks. Whether planning itineraries to scenic spots or simply choosing to stay home, making thoughtful plans ensures everyone can enjoy the festive atmosphere March has to offer. Remember, spring is just around the corner, lending itself to refreshing experiences both indoors and outdoors.
