March 11 Celebrates Panda Discovery Day

The day marks the historic encounter of the giant panda by missionary Armand David, igniting international fascination.

March 11 marks a special celebration known as Panda Discovery Day, commemorated every year to honor the moment when the existence of the giant panda was unveiled to the Western world. On this date back in 1869, French missionary Armand David encountered what he called the "strange bear skin of black and white" during his travels through the serene valleys of Sichuan, China. This chance encounter was pivotal, launching the giant panda—from obscurity to worldwide fame—as David judiciously collected the bear’s pelt for classification and study.

David, who had interests extending beyond theology to the realms of botany and zoology, created the bear specimen and successfully shipped it to the Paris Museum. This marked the beginning of our cultural fascination with the giant panda, which would only grow with time. Today, these chubby, lovable creatures are often termed the poster animals of conservation.

Fast forward to 1972, and we witness another milestone when giant pandas were officially introduced to Japan as symbols of friendship and diplomatic goodwill between Japan and China. The gift from the People's Republic of China, featuring two adorable pandas named Kankan and Ranran, arrived as the nations normalized relations. Their debut at Ueno Zoo sparked uncontrollable excitement across Japan, igniting what is now regarded as the “panda boom”—one of the most vibrant cultural phenomena associated with these majestic creatures.

The sheer excitement upon their arrival can hardly be overstated. From the moment Kankan and Ranran were displayed to the public starting November 1972, crowds flocked to the zoo, often extending long lines just to catch glimpses of the cuddly pairs. “Pandas are adorable; they eat and sleep most of the day,” one visitor laments about the often-sluggish display of these beloved bears. It wasn't just their behaviors; the appearance of the pandas had fans pouring over to catch sight of their black and white coats. Their unmistakable cuteness only added to their charm and allure.

Since the initial spark ignited by Kankan and Ranran, many other pandas have graced Ueno Zoo, each adding chapters to the beloved history of the institution. Featured highlights include Huanhuan and Feifei, who became the proud parents of two cubs named Tongtong and Youyou. The romantic narrative of panda births continued with the likes of Lingling, Shuangshuang, RiRi, and Shinshin, showcasing the zoo’s role as home to panda families. The celebrate panda duo born recently, Shao Shao and Lei Lei, continues to capture hearts since their birth in 2021, with their antics eagerly anticipated by audiences young and old.

These adorable creatures also boast intriguing habits, as they spend about half their day sleeping and munching through vast quantities of bamboo: around 20 to 30 kilograms daily! This lifestyle of eating and snoozing often leads people to question their unique appearance, prompting delightful debates about their coloring and how it aids their survival. Some researchers have pointed out, “The giraffe has spots for camouflage; the panda's color seems to serve no obvious purpose,” leaving many to ponder the intricacies of nature.

Presently, the opportunity to see these cherished pandas exists at just two locations: Ueno Zoo in the heart of Tokyo and Adventure World located within the verdant landscapes of Wakayama Prefecture. The enduring popularity of pandas signifies not merely their charm but their significant role as international icons associated with conservation and friendship. The impact these animals have had on human attitudes toward wildlife protection is monumental, as communities intertwine just to admire their gentle presence.

With such captivating histories and their lasting influence on pop culture as evidenced by recent surveys, the enduring symbol of the giant panda is poised to remain at the forefront of dialogue, sentiment and mutual respect between nations. Truly, the discovery of pandas has evolved far beyond mere curiosity to becoming symbols of peace, joy, and environmental consciousness.

For now, as we celebrate Panda Discovery Day, we can look back with fondness and pride at their remarkable story, one enriched by their ability to capture hearts worldwide right from the beautiful landscapes of Sichuan, China to the urban environments of Japan. Indeed, pandas continue to charm and educate generations to come.
