Maple Leafs Forward Ryan Reaves Suspended For Dangerous Hit On Darnell Nurse

Reaves faces five-game ban after illegal check leaves Oilers' Nurse injured and bloodied

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Ryan Reaves has found himself on the receiving end of significant penalties from the NHL after executing what has been deemed an illegal check to the head of Edmonton Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse during their recent matchup. The incident, which took place at Scotiabank Arena on November 16, resulted not only in Reaves being suspended for five games without pay, but also incited heated reactions within the hockey community.

The controversial hit occurred at 2:38 minutes during the second period of the Maple Leafs' tight 4-3 overtime victory over the Oilers. Nurse was positioned along the end boards, controlling the puck, when Reaves barreled through and struck him high. This collision nearly dislodged Nurse’s helmet and left him bleeding and dazed as he struggled to regain his footing. Medical staff rushed to attend to Nurse, who was later reported to be sidelined with an upper-body injury.

Following the incident, Reaves was immediately assessed with a match penalty, illustrating the severity of the hit. The NHL’s Department of Player Safety moved swiftly, announcing the suspension and fining Reaves $35,156.25. The punishment did not come as a surprise, particularly since replays revealed Nurse's head being the main point of contact during the play.

Reaves has had his share of trouble with the league previously. This latest suspension marks the fourth time he has faced disciplinary action for similar infractions over his lengthy career, which spans nearly 900 NHL games. His disciplinary history includes two other suspensions for illegal hits and additional fines for reckless behavior on the ice.

During the disciplinary hearing, NHL officials emphasized three key points for the length of Reaves’ suspension: the principal point of contact was Nurse's head, the impact was deemed avoidable, and Reaves' history of infractions weighed heavily against him. The Department of Player Safety’s video outlining these criteria made it clear why they opted for the maximum allowable suspension under the circumstances.

Nurse’s teammates were understandably upset. Oilers captain Connor McDavid was visibly emotional, arguing with referees during the game after Nurse was struck. Other players, like Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, condemned the hit, calling it ‘dangerous’ and highlighting the responsibility players have to make safe decisions on the ice.

McDavid was noted for his passionate defense of Nurse, stating, “The game is fast, but you’ve got to avoid the hit. We’re professional athletes, and we’re able to make those decisions quick. You know when a guy’s vulnerable.” Adam Henrique echoed similar sentiments, remarking, “It was to the head—just a bad play.”

The aftermath of the incident saw Nurse unable to return to the game, sparking concerns about his fitness for the remainder of the Oilers’ road trip, which includes games against the Montreal Canadiens and Ottawa Senators. The Oilers are already challenged with depth on the blue line, and Nurse’s absence could considerably affect their performance.

Interestingly, as the Oilers packed up after the game, there were signs of optimism surrounding Nurse’s condition. He was seen leaving the dressing room on his own, albeit with visible tape under his eye indicative of the hit he had endured. Nugent-Hopkins mentioned, “He’s obviously tough. I think he probably plays it off more than he’s feeling.”

The situation has sparked discussions across the league about the balance between aggressive play and player safety, especially concerning how penalties are enforced. Some commentators have raised eyebrows at the potential inconsistency of penalties delivered for similar infractions between players like Reaves and those suspended earlier, like Tanner Jeannot of the Los Angeles Kings, who recently returned after serving three games for a dangerous headshot.

This incident could lead to larger discussions about how the NHL handles player safety. Comparisons are likely to arise about how suspensions vary for similar acts, and debates surrounding what constitutes intentional versus accidental hits will continue. The optics of the disciplinary process must be clear to keep fan trust and player safety at the forefront.

While Reaves prepares to miss five games, eligible to return on December 4 against the Nashville Predators, nurse's future on the ice remains uncertain. The incident serves as yet another reminder of the fine line players walk between competitiveness and the risk of injury, with fans and players alike calling for greater accountability and awareness on the ice.
