Mango Founder Isak Andic Dies Hiking Accident

Tragic fall at Montserrat leaves fashion world mourning the loss of Isak Andic.

Tragedy struck this Saturday when Isak Andic, the 71-year-old founder of the renowned Spanish clothing brand Mango, lost his life after falling approximately 150 meters during a hiking excursion near Montserrat. Andic, who was accompanied by his son Jonathan and his wife, slipped on the rugged terrain of the well-known Salnitre caves route, leading to his unfortunate demise.

According to reports, Andic had embarked on the hike shortly after sunrise, intending to enjoy the scenic views and calm offered by this familiar setting. This trail, stretching between the Salnitre caves of Collbató and the Montserrat Monastery, has been frequented by Andic and his family several times before.

The day took a tragic turn as father and son were returning to their vehicle after enjoying the picturesque landscapes. Jonathan recounted the moment when he heard the ominous sound of loose rocks and sand. Turning around, he witnessed his father sliding down the steep embankment. Without hesitation, Jonathan called emergency services immediately at 12:39 PM, detailing the grave situation.

The area is known for its irregular terrain and steep drops, making it hazardous for hikers. Although typically considered manageable for seasoned trekkers, the combination of Andic's slip and the treacherous ground proved fatal. The incident raised concerns about the safety measures on such popular hiking routes.

Emergency responders, including three patrols from the Mossos d'Esquadra and additional units from the Catalan Fire Brigade, swiftly mobilized to the scene. An air rescue helicopter was deployed to locate Andic's body, which was eventually recovered from the craggy terrain by mountain unit officials.

Mango’s CEO, Toni Ruiz, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, stating, “With deep regret, we announce the unexpected passing of Isak Andic, our non-executive chairman and founder of Mango, due to an accident.” He described Andic as a visionary leader whose strategic insight and unwavering commitment significantly shaped the company’s values.

Born in Istanbul, Turkey, Andic moved to Barcelona at the age of 16. He founded Mango with his siblings Enric and Nahman after opening his first store at the famous Paseo de Gracia commercial street. The brand, known for its contemporary style, has flourished under his guidance, boasting nearly 2,800 stores worldwide and employing around 15,500 workers.

Reports indicate the company is assessing the impact of Andic’s sudden death. Notably, Andic held 95% of Mango's ownership and was ranked among Spain’s wealthiest individuals, with estimates of his fortune reaching approximately €4.5 billion.

The tragic loss of such an influential figure not only shakes the fashion industry but also leaves a deep void within his family and close associates. His regular hiking trips symbolized his connection to nature and commitment to family, experiences now forever altered by this unforeseen calamity.

The hiking trails of Montserrat, known for their breathtaking views and accessibility, have also become associated with occasional mishaps. Hikers often enjoy the stunning landscapes, yet experts caution about the mountain's unique topography, which can present challenges even on seemingly simple paths.

Juan Carlos Vázquez, a mountaineering expert, commented, “It’s a very trafficked trail suitable for families, but it can be slippery, and falls can occur.” He emphasized the importance of caution, particularly on segments adjacent to steep drops.

Following the incident, Jonathan Andic was treated for shock, reflecting the traumatic nature of witnessing his father’s accident. Estefanía Knuth, Andic’s partner since 2018, joined Jonathan at the emergency response location, illustrating the family’s immediate support during this distressing time.

With emergency efforts concluding, Andic’s body was transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine of Catalonia, where autopsy procedures will be conducted to formally confirm the course of events leading to his death.

This heart-wrenching incident has drawn the attention of both the media and the public, raising questions about safety practices on popular hiking trails and the measures necessary to protect outdoor enthusiasts. It also highlights the human cost of accidents such as these, where the love of nature can turn tragic.

Despite the grim events of the day, Andic’s legacy persists through Mango’s continued success and the lives he touched. “His passing leaves behind a tremendous void, but we all are, to some extent, his legacy,” stated the CEO, underscoring the commitment to uphold the values and vision Andic instilled within the company.

Time will tell how Mango navigates the challenges posed by this loss and honors its founder’s memory. Meanwhile, the community holds tightly to the memories of Isak Andic, reflecting on the indelible mark he left on the fashion world and the personal lives he enriched.
