Mandatory Evacuations Ordered As Pauline Road Fire Spreads

Fire in Sam Houston National Forest scorches 2,000 acres, containment efforts continue amidst challenging weather conditions.

SAN JACINTO COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- A significant wildfire in the Sam Houston National Forest has led to evacuation orders in Montgomery and San Jacinto Counties, as the Pauline Road Fire has burned approximately 2,000 acres. As of Thursday morning, this blaze is reported to be 20% contained, but conditions remain dire.

Initially igniting near FM-1725 and Alsobrooks Road in San Jacinto County, the fire has spread perilously close to the Montgomery County line, prompting mandatory evacuations in several areas. Around 900 homes currently lie within the evacuation zone, and officials are urging residents to evacuate immediately to ensure their safety.

Montgomery County Judge Mark Keough issued a sober warning, stating, "This thing is not going away for awhile. These winds and these gusts are exacerbating the situation and it continues to keep moving forward." He emphasized the critical nature of the situation, cautioning that the fire could become disastrous if the weather continues to exacerbate the conditions.

Despite no reports of structural damage thus far, the firefighting efforts have faced significant challenges. Judge Keough praised the efforts of firefighters and law enforcement for their tireless work through the night to protect homes and assist evacuations, saying, "We are blessed with the best, and the men and women of our fire departments and law enforcement agencies proved it yesterday and overnight. They worked tirelessly to assist residents evacuate, protect their homes, and wrangle cattle and horses to safety."

Fire crews have been working diligently, utilizing numerous air tankers, bulldozers, and additional firefighters. The current weather forecast indicates strong wind gusts, low humidity, and warmer temperatures, leading to a red flag warning that heightens the fire risk in the region.

Mandatory evacuation orders are still in effect for various parts of both counties, impacting around 900 homes. Roads under mandatory evacuation include Holstein Dr., Hereford Way, and Cross Cut, among others. These measures are crucial in protecting community members from the advancing flames.

Officials are also promoting the importance of staying informed during this emergency. The Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management has highlighted that its emergency notification system is the primary means for disseminating real-time information, including evacuation orders. Residents are encouraged to sign up for alerts by visiting Montgomery County Emergency Alerts to receive updates on evacuation procedures, road closures, and safety instructions.

In an effort to support displaced residents, shelters have been opened in Montgomery County at the East Montgomery County Community Center on First Street and in San Jacinto County at 255 Live Oak St. in Coldspring. However, on Wednesday night, officials noted that no residents took refuge in the shelters.

In an additional effort to support those affected, the Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management also ensured that animal shelters were ready, with locations available at Bull Sallas Park and Caney Creek Cowboy Church. Judge Keough stressed that there should be no reason for residents to stay behind and risk their safety, as help is available to transport them and their animals to safety.

Furthermore, Cleveland ISD schools remain closed on March 20, out of an abundance of caution related to the wildfire. With the potential for more evacuation orders throughout the day, officials continue to monitor the situation closely. They are vigilant about making the necessary calls for public safety.

The community's swift response, along with the dedicated efforts of local agencies, has made significant strides in protecting structures from the fire. As further updates emerge, residents are encouraged to heed evacuation orders and remain informed through trusted communication channels. The road ahead remains challenging, but the combined efforts of firefighting crews and local officials are aimed at bringing the situation under control.
