A man escaped from Hustad Prison early on Christmas Eve, prompting police to launch an extensive search as they seek the public's help. According to reports from Møre og Romsdal police, the incident occurred at approximately 6:15 AM, marking the start of immediate efforts to locate the man who had been under detention for property crimes.
Described as being in his late 30s, the escaped prisoner was last seen outside the prison walls, along the main road heading toward Brynhallen. He was wearing a black jacket and red prison pants when he made his escape. Police spokesperson Sindre Molnes confirmed to NRK, "We have several patrols actively searching for the individual. At the same time, we are investigating and trying to gather information to give us clues about where he might have gone."
Given the nature of the man's incarceration, it was noted he was held on charges related to property crimes, but he had not yet been convicted. The police emphasized there were no indications to suggest the man posed any immediate danger to the public. "There have been no threats or violence associated with his escape," Molnes reported, adding they have captured video footage showing the man outside the prison.
While the investigation is underway, authorities have not confirmed whether the escape was planned. Operasjonsleder Molnes stated, "It is too early to say if he had assistance, but we are pursuing various leads to understand how he managed to get away." The police are exploring the possibility of whether the man had any accomplices aiding his escape.
Following the incident, there was a rapid response from law enforcement. The police utilized tracking dogs to aid their search but have reported no success as of yet. "He had approximately 30 minutes from the time of his escape to when we were on the scene and began searching," Molnes explained. Despite the challenges, the police remain committed to locating the fugitive.
Authorities continue to urge anyone with information about the prisoner's whereabouts to contact them at telephone number 02800. "We are asking the public to help us. If anyone sees the man, they should reach out immediately," Molnes advised.
Hustad Prison, located just outside of Molde, houses both low and high-security inmates and has the capacity for 60 prisoners. Molnes noted the investigation will assess whether the escape reflects broader security issues within the facility. "We are trying to figure out how he got away from the location. Therefore, we’re requesting tips from the public," he said.
Meanwhile, the police are continuing to shift their resources to follow up on leads. They will also reassess whether they should release the man's name and image to the public if the search does not yield results. The urgency of the matter is high, and Fagbyrådet from Hustad Prison are cooperating with local law enforcement to identify any potential security lapses.
The man’s escape occurs against the backdrop of increasing concerns about prison security and the management of inmates with pending charges. It raises questions about the protocols and measures taken to prevent such incidents from occurring.
Authorities are leaving no stone unturned and have stated they will report on developments as they continue to piece together the timeline of events surrounding the escape. The community's assistance could be pivotal as they strive to re-capture the individual swiftly and safely.
