A man has been charged with attempted murder after pedestrians were hit by a car in central London on Christmas Day. Four people were taken to hospital, with one in critically condition, after reports of a car driving on the wrong side of the road on Shaftesbury Avenue early Wednesday morning.
Anthony Gilheaney, 30, has been charged with four counts of attempted murder, serious injury by driving whilst disqualified, driving a motor vehicle dangerously, and possession of a bladed article in a public place. He has been remanded in police custody and is set to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court later today.
The incident took place shortly after midnight, around 12:45 AM, when Gilheaney allegedly drove his Mercedes onto the pavement, colliding with pedestrians near the Gielgud Theatre and Sondheim Theatre, both popular venues for theatre-goers.
According to Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stuart Cundy, the suspect was arrested within minutes of the violent incident, which is being treated as isolated and not related to terrorism. “Our thoughts now are with the victims, one of which remains in a serious condition,” Cundy said.
Following the attack, which occurred as families were celebrating the festive holiday, emergency services quickly transported all four victims to local hospitals for treatment.
Witnesses reported seeing pedestrians thrown onto the pavement as the vehicle mounted the walkway. The scene was chaotic, with many bystanders rushing to aid the injured. One witness described the aftermath, saying, “It was horrific; people were screaming, and it was difficult to comprehend what had just happened.”
Days after the horrifying event, Shaftesbury Avenue continues to remain closed between Wardour Street and Rupert Street as investigations progress and to allow for safety assessments.
The police, emphasizing community safety, have reiterated their commitment to thoroughly investigate the incident. Gilheaney’s charges reflect the severity with which authorities are treating the occurrence, underscoring the potential for extensive legal consequences including significant prison time if convicted.
Before the incident, it has been suggested Gilheaney was involved in conflict at a nearby nightclub, which may have contributed to the events leading up to the car collision. There was no immediate confirmation on whether this will be considered as part of the investigation.
“We want to assure the public this is not the norm for our streets, especially on such a celebrated day,” stated Cundy. “Our officers acted swiftly and efficiently, and I hope this brings some comfort to those affected.”
The investigation has drawn widespread media attention, with many diverse opinions expressed on social platforms reflecting shock and outrage at the incident, particularly during what is typically regarded as a joyous holiday season.
“Holidays should be about family and gathering,” said one local resident. “To see something so tragic happen is beyond words.”
Police are continuing to gather evidence, including CCTV footage from establishments along Shaftesbury Avenue. This will assist them in piecing together the timeline and determining the factors contributing to the event.
For now, the community remains on edge as thoughts turn to the recovery of the victims, with heightened discussions about pedestrian safety measures and the actions of drivers during busy pedestrian times.
Anthony Gilheaney’s court appearance is highly anticipated, and many within the community are expected to be following closely to see how the legal system will address this shocking event. Advocates for pedestrian rights express hope it will lead to discussions about safety measures and more rigorous policing of drunk or reckless driving.
The conditions of the victims are being closely monitored, and updates are expected as loved ones await news of their recovery.
Meanwhile, Shaftesbury Avenue, the scene of this tragic Christmas Day incident, stands as a reminder of the need for vigilance on the roads, especially during times when many are distracted by the pressures and celebrations of the festive season.
