Maldives Sees 8.4% Increase In Russian Tourism

Russian tourist arrivals to the Maldives surge, reflecting strong demand and market growth.

The Maldives has seen a significant increase in tourism from Russia, with a reported 8.4% rise in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period last year. From January to March of this year, the islands welcomed 66,933 Russian tourists, up from 61,753 in 2024, according to the Russian Association of Tour Operators (ATOR). This positive trend was consistent throughout the quarter, with January experiencing an 8.6% increase, February a 4.6% rise, and March showing a notable 11.6% growth.

The Maldives remains a top destination for Russian travelers, ranking second in the list of the five key inbound markets for the island nation. In the first quarter of 2025, the overall number of foreign tourist visits to the Maldives reached 632,418, marking a 4.7% increase from the previous year. China continues to lead as the top market with 73,997 visitors, followed closely by Russia, Great Britain with 65,404 visitors, Italy with 57,955, and Germany with 44,266.

This surge in tourism is particularly noteworthy as it comes on the heels of a record year for Russian visitors in 2024, when over 225,000 Russians traveled to the Maldives. This figure represents a remarkable increase of 2.7 times compared to pre-pandemic levels, where only 83,400 Russians visited in 2019.

Tour operators have reported that sales growth has outpaced the overall tourism increase, indicating a strong demand for organized travel to the Maldives. Many operators noted that their sales increased by 15-25% compared to the same period last year, suggesting that more travelers are opting for package deals. The consistent demand for trips to the Maldives can be attributed to multiple factors, including direct flights and a variety of connecting flight options available through numerous airlines.

Analysts from ATOR have pointed out that about 45% of Russian tourists arriving in the Maldives do so via connecting flights. Additionally, the service quality on the islands is a significant draw, with the Maldives competing effectively with luxury offerings in Turkey, particularly during the winter months when many affluent Russians consider it a preferred destination.

Despite the premium pricing associated with travel to the Maldives, it remains a top choice among organized tourists in Russia. In fact, during February and March 2025, the Maldives ranked in the top ten destinations based on actual tour sales, with a growing market share compared to 2024.

As for the costs of traveling to the Maldives, package prices for April 2025 have been reported. A ten-day stay at a five-star hotel with full board and a direct flight from Moscow starts at approximately 572,000 rubles for two people. For an all-inclusive package, prices begin at 660,000 rubles, while the "ultra all inclusive" option starts at 755,000 rubles. If travelers opt for connecting flights, prices can be significantly lower, with packages starting at 265,000 rubles for full board, 397,000 rubles for all-inclusive, and 557,000 rubles for the ultra all-inclusive package.

The Maldives has consistently ranked among the top three most expensive overseas travel destinations for Russians, with some tour packages costing between 31 million to 59 million rubles. Experts have indicated that the traditional price drop for Maldives vacations is expected to begin in May, with summer months typically seeing an increase in demand for luxury accommodations at more favorable rates.

In conclusion, the Maldives continues to solidify its position as a premier destination for Russian tourists, with increasing numbers and a diverse range of offerings. As travel dynamics evolve, the islands are set to remain a favored choice for those seeking a luxurious getaway.
