Major Snowstorm Set To Hit Southern Quebec This Thursday

Meteorologists warn of significant snowfall and hazardous travel conditions as storm approaches.

A major snowstorm is bearing down on southern Quebec, with officials warning of significant snowfall and challenging travel conditions expected this Thursday. A powerful weather system originating from Texas is predicted to bring varying amounts of snow across the region.

Meteorologists predict snowfall amounts could reach anywhere from 5 to 35 centimeters, depending on the location. Bertin Ossonon, a meteorologist, observed, "The system arriving from Texas is quite strong, and even though it will lose energy, a coastal reforming system will boost it before hitting southern Quebec." This combination raises concerns for commuters as they prepare for what could be the first serious winter storm for the area.

Forecast models are showing two possible outcomes for the storm, particularly for Montreal and its surroundings. One scenario indicates the system could weaken, allowing for more snowfall accumulations. The second possibility suggests warmer temperatures could push rainfall to the southern regions, significantly impacting nearby areas like the Valley of Saint Lawrence.

For areas north of the river, particularly the Laurentides and Lanaudière regions, conditions are expected to be more severe, with predictions of 15 to 30 centimeters of snow accumulation. For Montreal and surrounding areas, experts estimate about 20 to 30 centimeters of snow, though with the potential for warmer temperatures to change precipitation from snow to rain later.

The storm's arrival could also bring strong winds, raising concerns over blowing snow and reduced visibility on the roads. Gusts of 40 to 60 kilometers per hour are anticipated, creating dangerous driving conditions, especially during the Thursday morning rush hour. Visibility could be sharply limited, making travel almost impossible at times. Ossonon noted, "We are tracking the system's evolution and path very closely, and we will have more details over the coming hours," emphasizing the importance of staying updated as conditions develop.

Residents across southern Quebec are advised to prepare for potentially harsh winter weather, including keeping emergency supplies ready and anticipating varied road conditions. This winter storm not only marks the arrival of more substantial snow for Montreal, which had been relatively mild until now, but also reflects the unpredictable nature of winter weather systems.

With these developments, it’s clear residents and authorities alike need to remain vigilant. Whether the storm favors heavy snow or rainful outcomes remains to be seen, but what is certain is the impact it will have on the daily lives of those living in affected regions.
