The Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk, announced the dismissal of Mariusz Feltynowski from his position as the Chief Commander of the State Fire Service (PSP) on February 26, 2024. The decision came at the behest of Minister of the Interior and Administration, Tomasz Siemoniak, and was communicated to the public by Jacek Dobrzyński, the ministry’s spokesperson.
The swift decision is reportedly linked to Feltynowski's connections with the controversial Collegium Humanum, where he was previously the rector. Feltynowski's organization had entered dubious partnerships, including one where the fire service allegedly paid for degrees offered by the institution, leading to significant scrutiny surrounding its legitimacy.
Following the announcement of Feltynowski's departure, Wojciech Kruczek, who previously led the Silesian regional PSP, was appointed as the new chief. Kruczek's elevation was confirmed by Dobrzyński through social media outlets and marks a significant leadership shift within the fire service.
Wojciech Kruczek, born on February 16, 1977, in Wodzisław Śląski, began his service career after graduating from the Main School of Fire Service (SGSP) in 2000. His early tenure involved roles such as the deputy commander at the JRG (rescue and fire unit) and later the chief commander at the Municipal PSP of Rybnik. Kruczek took on the role of Silesian Voivodeship Commander of PSP less than a year ago.
Kruczek has demonstrated effective leadership throughout his career by overseeing numerous significant rescue operations, including efforts during floods and structural collapses. His substantial experience was recognized when he was awarded various accolades, such as the Silver Medal for Long Service and the Silver Badge for Meritorious Service to Fire Protection. Notably, he received his first general rank from the President of Poland, Andrzej Duda, on November 10, 2024.
The circumstances surrounding Feltynowski's dismissal have drawn attention to the situation at Collegium Humanum, which has recently been embroiled in scandal. Reports indicate the institution offered expedited degree programs, which critics have labeled as diploma mills. Allegations surfaced about the legitimacy of the degrees, and investigations have resulted in the apprehension of numerous individuals, highlighting the scale of the controversy.
Specific actions taken by Feltynowski, which contributed to his dismissal, include signing contracts with Collegium Humanum, resulting in large financial disbursements meant for training firefighters. Sources reveal the PSP committed approximately 800,000 PLN for the controversial programs, benefiting individuals linked to the fire service, including Feltynowski's wife.
