Major Construction Disrupts Düsseldorf Transit Starting Tomorrow

Track renewal projects cause significant detours and route changes across the city.

Düsseldorf residents and commuters should brace themselves for significant disruptions as another phase of construction is set to kick off early tomorrow. Starting at 4 AM on March 21, 2025, and lasting until 4 AM on March 25, extensive closures will affect major transit routes in the city.

The construction primarily involves track renewal along the Kölner Landstraße. Specifically, closures will impact the sections between Hügelstraße and Nosthoffenstraße, as well as between Reusrather Straße and Werstener Feld. Car traffic heading into the city will face detours as these critical sections will be closed.

As the construction unfolds, public transport will also see major changes. The Rheinbahn has announced that due to the track work, multiple lines will be affected. The U72 trains will run only as far as the "Universität Ost/Botanischer Garten" station, ending their routes there instead of traveling to Benrath. Replacement buses will be deployed for passengers traveling between the "Südpark" and "Benrath Betriebshof" stops, as rail service will be suspended in this area.

In addition, the U76 line will terminate at the "Kaiserslautener Straße" stop, with buses taking over the route to Holthausen. Furthermore, the U79 will end its journey at the "Hauptbahnhof" stop instead of continuing to its original destination. Riders can catch alternative connections with lines U72 and U73 starting at "Heinrich-Heine-Allee" for their travel needs.

For bus traffic, the line 817 heading toward Heinrich-Heine-Allee will face re-routing from the "Holthausen" stop, while the usual Haltestellen, including "Elbruchstraße," will be discontinued during this period.

In light of these significant changes, the Rheinbahn is urging commuters to plan their journeys in advance. Posting clear communication at affected stops, electronic boards, and audio announcements in vehicles will keep passengers informed about the status of services. Passengers should anticipate delays and waiting times due to the altered routes.

The reason for the construction works is clear: the step is part of the ongoing efforts to modernize and enhance the public transport infrastructure in Düsseldorf. With improving service reliability and rail quality at the core of this initiative, city officials believe that these improvements will better serve the growing population and its transit demands in the coming years.

Officials recommend that residents and commuters avoid the construction zones where possible and consider alternative routes to their destinations. With sections of Kölner Landstraße being closed to cars, local intersections, including Hinter den Höfen, Reusrather Straße, and Küppersteger Straße, will be inaccessible.

For real-time information and updates related to the construction, the Rheinbahn encourages all travelers to use the "Schlaue Nummer," a toll-free hotline available around the clock at 0800. 6 50 40 30.

As Düsseldorf continues to grow and modernize its public transportation systems, these closures are a temporary but necessary measure aimed at ensuring a more efficient, reliable travel experience for all. Commuters are urged to stay informed and to be considerate of others who may also be affected by the disruptions.
