The Maio Amarelo 2025 campaign is set to launch across Brazil, aiming to raise awareness about traffic safety and reduce accidents. Organized by various state departments including the Circunscrição Regional de Trânsito (Ciretran) in Caxias, the campaign will run from May 7 to May 25, 2025. This year’s theme, "Desacelere, seu bem maior é a vida" ("Slow down, your greatest asset is life"), emphasizes the importance of cautious driving and the value of life.
Lisiane Bezerra, head of the Ciretran in Caxias, stated, "We have gathered representatives from various agencies to discuss the Maio Amarelo campaign. This year, we will focus on educational actions and informative blitzes throughout the month." The campaign aims to foster a more humane and secure traffic environment, involving all stakeholders from traffic management to healthcare providers.
In Caxias, numerous educational initiatives will be carried out in schools and public spaces. These include lectures, informative blitzes, and simulations of victim care. The campaign is supported by various organizations, including the Serviço de Atendimento Móvel de Urgência, Complexo Hospitalar Gentil Filho, and the municipal departments of Transit, Health, and Education. The integration of these entities underscores a collective commitment to creating safer roadways.
Sargento Moisés, the municipal secretary for Transit, Transport, and Urban Mobility, remarked, "We aim to educate the public about responsible behavior on the roads to reduce traffic accident rates." The campaign also draws participation from local educational institutions like IFMA Campus Caxias and Unifacema, which will engage students in traffic safety education.
In addition to Caxias, the Maio Amarelo campaign has a broader reach. Established by the United Nations on May 11, 2011, as part of the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020, the campaign has become a global symbol of traffic safety awareness. Its current goal, according to the UN's Global Plan for Road Safety 2021-2030, is to halve the number of deaths and injuries from traffic accidents by 2030.
In Alegrete, local authorities are collaborating with the State Highway Police, Federal Highway Police, and Driver Training Centers to promote awareness about the importance of calmness while driving. The Maio Amarelo agenda in Alegrete includes educational blitzes, traffic schools for children, and discussions on safe driving practices with high school students.
"We invite all citizens to reflect on their traffic behaviors," said a local official. "Questions like: Am I leaving early to avoid rushing? Do I respect speed limits? As pedestrians, are we aware of the distractions caused by cell phone use?" This initiative seeks to encourage community involvement in fostering safer traffic environments.
Meanwhile, the government of Rondônia is kicking off its Maio Amarelo campaign with a mega action event on May 1, 2025. This event will take place at Parque do Abobrão in Porto Velho and will feature various activities, including an exhibition on the history of automobiles and the Maio Amarelo campaign, live performances, and a raffle of bicycles and other prizes.
Fábio Duarte, director of the Escola Pública de Trânsito (Public Traffic School), emphasized that the campaign's educational efforts will continue throughout the year, stating, "Even after Maio Amarelo, we must remind everyone that life is more valuable than a few minutes on the road." The campaign will also include several activities across the state, such as educational lectures, street market visits, and community engagement efforts.
On May 5, the Government of Sergipe will host its own opening ceremony for Maio Amarelo at the Detran/SE headquarters in Aracaju. This event will feature the unveiling of the Japaré mascot and the official delivery of a new Detran vehicle. The theme remains consistent across the states: "Desacelere: seu bem maior é a vida."
The Maio Amarelo campaign not only aims to reduce traffic accidents but also seeks to instill a culture of safety and responsibility among drivers and pedestrians alike. With the active participation of various sectors, including government, educational institutions, and local communities, the initiative looks to make a lasting impact on road safety.
As the campaign progresses through May, the message is clear: everyone has a role to play in ensuring safer roads. The collective efforts of all involved will not only enhance public awareness but also contribute to a significant reduction in traffic-related fatalities and injuries.
