Mainland Chinese Visitors Can Now Use T-Union Cards On MTR

Starting March 22, travelers can streamline payments for subway fares in Hong Kong using transit cards accepted in over 300 mainland cities.

Starting on Saturday, March 22, 2025, visitors from mainland China will find their travel through Hong Kong’s MTR subway system made easier with the acceptance of China T-Union transit cards. This new payment method, announced by the MTR Corp earlier this month, aims to simplify fare payments for travelers and enhance their experience while navigating Hong Kong.

The China T-Union cards, already recognized in over 300 mainland cities and in Macao, will be accepted for most subway journeys, albeit with some notable exceptions. Passengers will not be able to use these cards on the Airport Express, first-class services on the East Rail Line, Light Rail Transit services, and MTR buses. Each MTR station equipped to accept T-Union cards will feature at least two ticketing gates fitted with the necessary card readers. All passengers must tap their cards—whether physical or virtual on their smartphones—against a reader displaying the T-Union logo to enter or exit. Notably, the fares will mirror those charged for adult Octopus card users, with the amounts calculated via the real-time exchange from renminbi to Hong Kong dollars.

Before embarking on an MTR trip, passengers are required to have a minimum balance of 50 yuan (approximately $6.90) on their T-Union card. However, it’s essential to note that these cards cannot be recharged at MTR stations; travelers will need to add value to their cards in advance while still on the mainland or at designated locations.

The T-Union card, established in 2015 as a national transit option, allows for seamless fare payments across various jurisdictions where participating public transport systems recognize it. The new collaboration follows the introduction of a T-Union card by Octopus in 2024, providing Hong Kong residents an opportunity to utilize this card on mainland public transport.

Jeny Yeung Mei-chun, Hong Kong Transport Services Director at MTR Corp, emphasized the significance of this development, stating, “Having more payment options and diversified services will facilitate the needs of more passengers, including visitors to Hong Kong, allowing them to freely navigate the extensive MTR network, experience easy travel, and immerse themselves in the charms of the city.”

The introduction of T-Union also reflects a broader trend of increasing interoperability among transportation systems in the region, where solutions like these aim to offer visitors and residents enhanced convenience. Currently, the MTR network accepts payment via various methods including tickets, Octopus cards, QR codes, and contactless bank cards carrying Union Pay, Visa, or Mastercard logos. The implementation of this additional payment option not only streamlines passenger flows but also prepares the subway system for an upsurge in visitors from the mainland.

As March 22 approaches, travelers and Hong Kong locals alike await the proactive steps taken by MTR Corp toward a more integrated and user-friendly transportation experience. The prospect of easing fare transactions for travelers from mainland China is sure to be a welcome addition, likely facilitating a smoother journey for all who utilize the MTR subway system.
