Maine-et-Loire Braces For Flood Risks From Storm Eowyn

Authorities issue warnings as heavy rains could lead to significant flooding across the region this weekend.

Residents of Maine-et-Loire are bracing for potentially hazardous weather as Météo France has issued yellow vigilance warnings for floods and heavy rainfall, effective Friday, January 24, 2025. The arrival of storm Eowyn is expected to bring significant precipitation to the northwestern region of France, particularly affecting Maine-et-Loire and nearby areas.

According to forecasts, the most intense rainfall is expected to occur between 6 PM and midnight, with total accumulations anticipated to exceed 30 to 40 mm. These conditions have raised alarms for flooding, prompting local authorities to urge the community to stay vigilant. Prefect Philippe Chopin emphasized the importance of local citizens adhering to safety recommendations during this period.

"Make sure to gather information before undertaking any travel and comply with road signage," advised Chopin. He also reminded residents to adjust their driving according to weather conditions and to avoid roads submerged even partially. Outdoor leisure activities near bodies of water should be postponed, as the risk of flooding is considerable.

Residents are encouraged to monitor the rising water levels closely and secure any valuable possessions at risk of being damaged. It is recommended to maintain distance from rivers and low-lying areas, as officials observe the weather situation closely through the Météo France updates.

The meteorological service has indicated the rainfall event will not only impact Maine-et-Loire but can also significantly affect surrounding regions, including Britanny and Normandy, where forecasts predict local precipitation levels between 40 to 50 mm. The statement from Météo France warned, "The change of weather is expected to solidify over the weekend, bringing additional disturbances accompanied by strong winds on Sunday to the North-West."

This rain-followed week of winter temperatures has seen daytime highs reaching up to 12 degrees Celsius, but as the weekend nears, fluctuations are anticipated with temperatures during January 25-26 varying from 2 to 12 degrees.

On Saturday, January 25, light showers are projected to persist throughout the day across the department, though slight breaks may occur during the afternoon. Yet, cloud cover is expected to remain substantial. Temperatures are forecasted to stay between 8°C and 10°C. Eowyn’s impact will continue on Sunday, as morning breaks will lead back to rainy conditions by early afternoon, intensifying later on.

Météo France has warned of sustained rainfall throughout Monday, January 26, as the effects of the previous days linger. Downpours may intermittently shift to lighter showers, with average temperatures hovering around 10°C.

The community is urged to stay informed via local news sources and official weather updates. Understanding how to navigate these changing conditions is key for safety and preparedness as Maine-et-Loire faces the challenges presented by storm Eowyn.
