Magnitude 3.3 Earthquake Hits Yeoncheon Gyeonggi Province

The quake struck just days after a smaller tremor, prompting safety alerts in surrounding areas.

A magnitude 3.3 earthquake struck Yeoncheon-gun in Gyeonggi Province on May 10, 2025, at 1:19 PM, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). This seismic event occurred just three days after a smaller magnitude 2.5 earthquake was recorded 17 kilometers southwest of Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province on May 7, 2025.

The epicenter of the latest quake was located 5 kilometers northeast of Yeoncheon-gun, at coordinates 38.14 degrees north latitude and 127.09 degrees east longitude. The earthquake struck at a depth of 9 kilometers, which is relatively shallow and can amplify the shaking felt on the surface.

The KMA reported that the tremors were felt significantly in the Yeoncheon area, where a shaking intensity of 4 was recorded. An intensity of 4 indicates that many people indoors could feel the shaking, with some potentially being awakened from sleep, and items like furniture and windows shaking noticeably.

In addition to Yeoncheon, areas such as Pocheon in Gyeonggi Province and Cheorwon in Gangwon Province experienced a shaking intensity of 3. This level of intensity means that individuals indoors, particularly those on upper floors, experienced noticeable shaking, while parked vehicles may have swayed slightly.

During the earthquake, the KMA received a total of 12 reports of tremors, including six from Gyeonggi Province and three each from Incheon and Seoul. Fortunately, there were no reports of damage following the quake.

This earthquake is notable as it is the fourth strongest recorded in South Korea this year, with a total of 28 earthquakes of magnitude 2.0 or higher having occurred so far. The strongest earthquake reported this year was a magnitude 3.7 quake that occurred on May 5, 2025, 52 kilometers northwest of Taean-gun, Chungnam.

As the KMA continues to monitor seismic activity, they have urged residents in the affected areas to remain cautious and aware of their surroundings. The warning highlights the importance of being prepared for aftershocks, which can follow significant seismic events.

In summary, the recent earthquake in Yeoncheon-gun serves as a reminder of the region's seismic activity and the need for preparedness among residents. With the KMA actively monitoring the situation, further updates will be provided as necessary.
