Magic Overcome Hornets 102-86 Before All-Star Break

Paolo Banchero leads the charge as Orlando shakes off slow start to secure victory.

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Orlando Magic secured a strong victory over the Charlotte Hornets, defeating them 102-86 on February 12, 2025. This decisive win came just before the NBA paused for the All-Star break, giving the Magic some much-needed momentum.

Paolo Banchero led the charge for Orlando with 24 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. His ability to shake off a cold-shooting first half was key to the Magic's success. Banchero's contributions helped Orlando pull away from the struggling Hornets, who have been handicapped by injuries, particularly to star player LaMelo Ball, who was out with right ankle soreness.

Despite the Hornets managing to lead at halftime, they were unable to maintain their performance as the Magic surged ahead. Orlando's coach Jamahl Mosley emphasized their defensive strategy, stating, "Our ability to get stops and get out and run and get some easy baskets, I thought was good for us." This approach paid off, as the Magic executed a dominant third quarter, outscoring Charlotte 33-19.

Anthony Black also stepped up for the Magic, contributing 18 points off the bench, shooting 8 for 13 from the field. His performance provided the team with the spark they needed, particularly after the first half where their 3-point shooting struggled. Banchero noted, “He was really good. He looked really confident taking and making shots, driving the ball, and guarding as well.”

The Magic started the game with some challenges, shooting only 5-of-21 (23.8%) from 3-point range in the first half. Yet, they shifted gears after halftime, showing the intensity and tenacity necessary to take complete control of the game. They finished with 32.6% shooting from behind the arc, adding to their ability to dominate in the paint.

On the other side, the Hornets fell to 13-39, grappling with multiple injuries and shoot deficiencies. Miles Bridges was the standout for Charlotte, leading his team with 19 points and eight rebounds. Despite not having their top scorers available, the Hornets fought through the challenge but were unable to match the energy of the Magic.

The game is significant, especially for the Magic, who have endured ups and downs this season. Before the game, the team had won just three of their last 14 games, with players emphasizing the importance of regaining their winning rhythm. Center Wendell Carter Jr. remarked, “Get back in the winning column by any means necessary. Tonight is very important.”

This victory not only boosts Orlando's morale but also places them at 27-29 for the season as they head toward the All-Star break. Returning after the break, they will face off against the Atlanta Hawks on February 20, aiming to build on this momentum.

With the Hornets’ current circumstances, they will need to reassess their strategy and find ways to overcome adversity moving forward. They have lost nine of their last ten games, placing significant pressure on remaining players to step up.

Overall, the Magic showcased resilience and determination, showing they can compete fiercely when they find their rhythm. Fans will be watching closely to see if this win propels them to greater success as the season progresses.
