Mads Pedersen Claims First Stage Victory At Giro D'Italia

Danish sprinter wins in Tirana as Mikel Landa retires due to injury

Mads Pedersen, the Danish sprinter from Lidl-Trek, showcased his speed and determination by winning the first stage of the Giro d'Italia 2025 on May 9, 2025. The stage spanned 160 kilometers, starting from the port city of Durres and culminating in the capital, Tirana, Albania. With this victory, Pedersen not only claimed the win but also donned the prestigious pink jersey, marking him as the leader of the 108th edition of the Giro, the second-largest Grand Tour in the world after the Tour de France.

In an electrifying finish, Pedersen triumphed in a sprint against strong competitors, finishing ahead of Belgium's Wout Van Aert, who took second place, and Orluis Aular from Movistar Team, who secured third. The race was tightly contested, particularly in the final stretch where Pedersen's tactical prowess shone through, allowing him to outpace Van Aert, who had been a formidable rival throughout the stage.

"I knew it would be a tough race, especially with the climbs and the competition, but I felt strong and confident leading into the final sprint," Pedersen remarked after his victory. This win marks Pedersen's fifth victory of the season and his second in the Giro d'Italia, following his previous success in 2023.

The race was characterized by a series of breakaway attempts early on, with a group of five riders initially trying to gain an advantage. However, the Lidl-Trek team maintained a tight grip on the peloton, reeling in the breakaway about 40 kilometers from the finish line. The stage included a significant climb, the Surrel, which tested the riders' endurance and strategy.

Francesco Busatto, the top Italian finisher, came in fourth place, while Diego Ulissi from XDS Astana Team finished sixth. Busatto's performance earned him the Maglia Bianca, awarded to the best young rider in the race.

Unfortunately, the day was marred by the injury of Mikel Landa from Soudal-Quickstep, who crashed a few kilometers from the finish line. Landa was forced to retire from the race due to a suspected broken collarbone, a significant blow for his team and fans alike. He was promptly taken away in an ambulance, leaving spectators concerned about his condition.
