The streets of Madrid are alive with excitement as the 47th edition of the Zurich Rock and Roll Running Series Madrid, also known as the Maratón de Madrid, takes place today, April 27, 2025. This year’s event has attracted a record 45,000 runners, up from 40,000 last year, and features participants from an impressive 118 countries. The marathon is not just a test of endurance; it promises to be a vibrant celebration of sport and community, with an anticipated economic impact exceeding 64 million euros for the city.
Runners will compete in three categories: the full marathon (42 kilometers), the half marathon (21 kilometers), and a 10-kilometer race. All events will weave through the heart of Madrid, showcasing iconic landmarks such as Callao, Preciados, Puerta del Sol, Plaza de España, and the majestic Palacio Real. The route will also feature stunning views of the Cibeles and Neptuno fountains, the Catedral de la Almudena, and the renowned museums of Prado and Reina Sofía.
Since its inception in 1978, the Madrid marathon has evolved into one of the most competitive races in the world, earning a Gold Label from the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). This recognition places it alongside prestigious marathons in New York, London, and Berlin. Last year's winners, Ethiopian Mitku Tafa and Kenyan Naom Jebet, set high standards with their impressive times of 2:08:57 and 2:26:19, respectively.
The festivities will be amplified by 30 animation points along the route, featuring 17 live music bands ready to energize both participants and spectators. The organization behind the event, MAPOMA, has been awarded the Sustainable Event Certificate by AENOR for its commitment to environmental responsibility, making the Madrid marathon the only one globally to have this certification.
As the day unfolds, the race schedule is as follows: the 10-kilometer race will kick off at 08:00, 08:05, and 08:10. The half marathon and full marathon will start between 08:45 and 10:15, with wheelchair athletes beginning their race at 08:40. All participants must cross the finish line by 16:35, located on Paseo de Recoletos near Calle Almirante.
However, the marathon's excitement comes with significant traffic disruptions across the city. The Madrid City Council has implemented a comprehensive mobility plan to manage the event, which includes extensive road closures. Traffic will be restricted on Paseo de Recoletos from 00:00 on April 26 until 19:00 on April 27, and on Paseo de la Castellana from Plaza de Colón to Plaza de Emilio Castelar during the same time frame. Additional closures will affect major thoroughfares from 07:15 on race day, including Paseo de la Castellana, Plaza de Castilla, and Gran Vía.
To ensure pedestrian safety, several crossing zones will be available, allowing spectators to navigate the city while supporting the runners. Key crossing points include Paseo de la Castellana at Plaza del Doctor Marañón and Plaza de San Juan de la Cruz, as well as locations along Paseo del Prado near Plaza de Cibeles.
With more than 25% of participants being international visitors, the marathon serves as a unique showcase for Madrid, highlighting its cultural heritage and beauty. The event not only promotes fitness but also fosters a sense of community as friends and families gather to cheer on their loved ones.
As the marathon unfolds, the atmosphere is set to be electric. Spectators are encouraged to use public transport, as many bus routes will experience diversions or suspensions, particularly lines that traverse the city center. The Metro system will remain operational, although some access points may be temporarily closed.
In the men's category, Kenyan Reuben Kiprop Kipyego emerges as the favorite, boasting a personal best of 2:03:55 and a recent third-place finish at the Rotterdam Marathon. Meanwhile, the women’s race is expected to be fiercely contested, with Ethiopian athletes Bontu Bekela Gada, Ayantu Gemechu Abdi, and Kebene Chala, each holding records under 2:27.
The Zurich Rock and Roll Running Series Madrid 2025 is more than just a race; it is a celebration of athleticism, community spirit, and the beauty of Madrid. As the runners take to the streets, the city will be alive with music, cheers, and the shared joy of sport, making this marathon a memorable event for all.
