Madrid Faces Severe Storms With Heavy Rain And Hail

The city prepares for intense weather as celebrations coincide with a yellow alert for rain and storms

Madrid is bracing for a day of intense storms as the month of May kicks off under the threat of severe weather. On May 2, 2025, the city is expected to experience heavy rain, with forecasts predicting over 20 mm of precipitation in just a few hours. This meteorological phenomenon coincides with the community's holiday celebrations, raising concerns about potential disruptions to outdoor activities.

The Ayuntamiento (City Council) and emergency services have activated their standard protocols in preparation for the anticipated downpour, urging residents to exercise caution. According to the Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (Aemet), the most significant rainfall is expected today, with a 100% probability of rain and winds from the south at 21 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 31 km/h. These conditions heighten the risk of falling branches, traffic disruptions, and localized flooding in low-lying areas.

The predicted rainfall for May 2 is particularly alarming, as meteorological models indicate an accumulation of 20.3 mm throughout the day. The relative humidity is set to be high at 79%, contributing to a muggy atmosphere typical of stormy days in Madrid. Temperatures will range from a minimum of 13°C to a maximum of 20°C, making for an uncomfortable environment for outdoor festivities.

As the city celebrates its Day of the Community, the Aemet has issued a yellow alert for rain and storms, which will remain in effect until 8:00 PM. This alert covers not just Madrid but also 15 other autonomous communities, emphasizing the widespread nature of the impending storms. The agency has warned that the storms could be accompanied by hail, adding to the potential for damage.

In anticipation of the severe weather, ASEM 112 has recommended that residents take extra precautions while driving. They advise increasing the distance between vehicles to prevent accidents in the expected adverse conditions. The agency has also emphasized the importance of staying informed through official channels and adjusting plans based on evolving weather conditions.

Looking ahead, meteorological forecasts suggest that while the storms may lessen in intensity on May 3, they will not completely disappear. A 40% chance of rain remains, with expected accumulations of approximately 3.3 mm. Winds are forecasted to decrease slightly to 15 km/h, with gusts of up to 23 km/h. Temperatures will remain stable, hovering between 12°C and 20°C, with a relative humidity of 73%.

On May 4, the probability of precipitation will hold steady at 40%, with expected rainfall of about 2.6 mm. The weather will continue to be unstable, with temperatures dropping slightly to a range of 11°C to 17°C. Despite the less intense storms, conditions will still be uncomfortable, with high humidity levels of 77% and increased cloud cover.

As the weekend progresses, the stormy weather is expected to persist across the region. The Aemet has indicated that additional rainfall will occur on Saturday, particularly in the western parts of the peninsula, and Sunday will see widespread showers, albeit lighter than those anticipated on May 2.

In summary, Madrid's festive atmosphere on May 2 will be significantly impacted by severe weather conditions. With heavy rain, potential hail, and high winds forecasted, residents are advised to remain vigilant and adjust their plans accordingly. The Aemet's alerts serve as a reminder of the unpredictability of spring weather in the region, highlighting the need for preparedness as storms continue to affect daily life.
