Macron Condemns Russian Attempts To Destabilize Moldova

Strengthening cooperation with Moldova to combat foreign interference remains top priority.

Emmanuel Macron, the French President, condemned on March 10, 2025, Russia's increasingly uninhibited attempts to destabilize Moldova and its democratic institutions during a press conference with Moldovan President Maia Sandu at the Élysée Palace. Macron stated, "We have decided to strengthen our cooperation to increase Moldova's resilience to foreign interference," reflecting France's commitment to support its eastern neighbor amid geopolitical tensions.

This pledge to bolster ties came alongside the agreement to combat disinformation, which both leaders agreed is now as important as ensuring security. "Today, we commit to joining forces in the fight against disinformation. For truth is as important as security today," Sandu remarked, emphasizing the dual challenges faced by Moldova.

Macron highlighted the realities confronting Moldova, describing the country as being at the forefront of the Russian threat. He reaffirmed France's unwavering support for Moldova's independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity within internationally recognized borders. He acknowledged the significant human and economic toll the war of aggression by Russia against Ukraine has exacted on Moldova, whose airspace is often violated by Russian drones and missiles.

"Moldova has learned at the forefront of this conflict, Russia does not respect any promise," Sandu asserted. This sobering observation echoed Macron's warnings about Russia's manipulative tactics, which have been evident not only in Moldova but also impacting elections within Romania. He noted, "If President Putin is not restrained, he will undoubtedly go to Moldova and possibly beyond to Romania," underscoring the importance of proactive measures to deter Russia's ambitions.

The discussions between Macron and Sandu included the announcement of Viginum, the French agency aimed at combating foreign digital interference, enhancing its cooperation with Moldova's strategic communication center. This agency will focus particularly on safeguarding electoral processes as fears of disruption rise, especially with Moldova's recent presidential elections tarnished by allegations of Russian meddling.

The European Union has expressed significant concern for Moldova's stability, officially opening accession negotiations with the small former Soviet republic with its population of approximately 2.6 million last June. This initiative was welcomed by Macron, who praised Moldova's democratic processes as they triumphed over external interferences and maneuverings.

Both leaders recognized the courage required to navigate Moldova's precarious position, with Sandu reaffirming her commitment to fortify Moldovan democratic institutions. She stated, "We have learned on the front lines of this conflict, Russia does not respect any promises," reflecting the long-standing grievances against Russian imperialism.

Macron's calls for solidarity among European nations were accompanied by broader reflections on the current global order, which he described as increasingly brutal and uncertain. He asserted, "The world is becoming more brutal and uncertain. We must call for a safer and stronger Europe," hinting at the necessity for united front among European nations amid rising threats.

These recent commitments mark the continuing evolution of France's strategic partnership with Moldova, as both countries navigate the turbulent waters of European security. Macron's expression of steadfast support features prominently as France aims to assist Moldova in achieving its European aspirations, signaling to the international community the wider significance of Moldova's sovereignty.

Macron concluded the press conference by confirming his dedication to the Moldovan cause, assuring Sandu and the Moldovan people, "France will remain by your side to help you fulfill your European aspirations." This statement encapsulates the essence of the bilateral relationship blossoming between France and Moldova, rooted in mutual respect and the shared goal of resisting external pressures from adversarial forces.
