M6 Motorway Closed Southbound After Fatal Crash

A serious collision between vehicle and lorry leaves one man dead and causes significant travel disruptions.

The M6 motorway remains closed southbound today, February 28, after a tragic accident involving a lorry and car late Thursday night, resulting in one fatality and serious injuries. The closure extends from junction 16 near Crewe to junction 15 near Stoke-on-Trent, causing significant disruption for motorists and commuters.

According to National Highways, the incident was reported just before 10:00 PM GMT on February 27. The collision occurred when the driver of a Toyota Avensis struck the male driver of the white MAN Truck HGV, who had left his vehicle after it broke down. Staffordshire Police confirmed the lorry driver was critically injured at the scene and unfortunately died shortly thereafter. His family is being supported by specialist officers during this difficult time.

The driver of the Toyota Avensis sustained leg and facial injuries, though they are not believed to be life-threatening. He was treated on-site by emergency crews from West Midlands Ambulance Service and then transported to the Royal Stoke University Hospital.

The police have indicated this is a ‘protracted police closure’, meaning the investigation is extensive and the southbound carriageway will remain shut throughout today, with normal traffic conditions not expected to resume before mid-afternoon at the earliest.

Motorists have been advised by National Highways to follow the established diversion route to bypass the blockage. They should exit the M6 southbound at junction 16, travel along the A500 southwards around Stoke-on-Trent, and then rejoin the motorway at junction 15.

Staffordshire Police are actively seeking witnesses to the crash, particularly anyone who may have dashcam footage from the area at the time of the incident. A spokesperson noted, “We are appealing for anyone who was travelling nearby with information to assist with our investigation.”

Heavy congestion is expected on the diversion routes as traffic seeking alternative paths is likely to increase pressure on local roads. Reports indicate significant delays are already affecting routes around Clayton and Newcastle, with traffic building up at points like Sandbach and Arclid.

Fortunately, one lane of the M6 has recently reopened, but with two lanes still closed for recovery operations, long delays continue to affect drivers approaching the area.

The severity of the crash highlights concerns about motorway safety, particularly as the M6 services as a primary route for freight and transportation. Roads affected by such incidents can have broad impacts on logistics and commuting for those reliant on timely travel.

Motorists are encouraged to remain patient and make informed decisions about their route, checking National Highways for updates throughout the day to stay abreast of the situation. Anyone with relevant information is urged to report it to the authorities directly.

The fatality has raised awareness about the dangers associated with breakdowns on the motorway and the importance of vehicles remaining safely on the hard shoulder until assistance arrives.

This harrowing incident serves as yet another reminder of the potential hazards on the roads, underscoring the need for cautious driving and attentiveness, particularly during adverse conditions.
