Luxembourg And Belgium Prepare For Snowfall This Week

Meteorologists predict significant snow accumulation starting Thursday, impacting travel and road conditions.

Luxembourg and Belgium are preparing for significant snowfall as the New Year begins with weather warnings from meteorologists predicting varying amounts of snow across the regions.

MeteoLux has issued forecasts indicating snowfall could range from 1 to 10 centimeters, especially impacting the heights of the Grand-Duché. Specifically, they reported, "in the morning, a layer of snow up to two centimeters is likely to form on the heights." This is expected to occur due to the arrival of a cold front descending from Scandinavia, which is impacting the weather throughout this period.

On Wednesday morning, meteorologist David Dehenauw noted, "the first storm of 2025 has been born," with winds reaching up to 90 kilometers per hour hitting the area. There’s a substantial likelihood of rain turning to snow during the night across southern Belgium, particularly south of the Sambre and Meuse valleys.

According to Dehenauw, "the snow is likely to fall at certain spots between breaks of sunlight. It will certainly be the case on the heights," with accumulations expected to remain until Sunday. The snowfall will be mixed with rain, leading to potential hazardous conditions on the roads.

Conditions are set to remain unstable leading through the week. MeteoLux also predicts additional snow on Saturday and Sunday, advising residents to exercise caution as road conditions may become slippery.

With the earlier snowfall, meteorologists warn of the challenges presented by the weather. The cautious message is clear: "be careful as the road conditions could be slippery over the next few days," as temperatures are expected to dip close to zero by the end of the week.

This winter weather outlook has raised awareness among citizens, especially with the potential for significant snowfall affecting travel and daily activities. Although snow may appear picturesque, the accompanying wind and moisture could complicate conditions on roads and sidewalks.

It is also noted by the meteorologists from both regions of Luxembourg and Belgium, the snowfall combined with rain will lead to quick melting, minimizing the longevity of solid snow coverage. They stated, "the snow will quickly melt away during the afternoon with expected high temperatures between 7 and 9 degrees Celsius later this week."

The snowfall forecast highlights the impact of seasonal weather patterns starting 2025. Despite the instability, it keeps the winter spirit and activities alive as towns prepare for the white, winter wonderland effect following the snowfalls.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the changing weather conditions, as continued updates from MeteoLux and other meteorological services promise to keep the public advised as conditions evolve.
