Lunar New Year 2025: Culinary Highlights And Travel Trends

New gourmet experiences and travel options set to mark the Lunar New Year celebrations across Japan and Taiwan.

The Lunar New Year is upon us, and the anticipation for celebrations is rising, particularly with culinary and travel trends shaping up for 2025. Hotels and businesses are gearing up to offer unique experiences to commemorate the festive period, especially targeting the Chinese and Taiwanese markets.

At the forefront of these celebrations is the Yokohama Bay Sheraton Hotel & Towers, which has introduced the luxurious "Red Dragon Lunar New Year Course" at their Chinese restaurant, Sai Ryū. This exclusive dining experience runs from January 6 to March 31. Chef LU Bing You has prepared special dishes brimming with auspicious ingredients aimed at bringing good fortune for the new year.

Beginning the feast is the signature cocktail, the “Red Dragon,” leading guests to enjoy scrumptious dishes like the aromatic shrimp seasoned with fragrant powders, combining sweetness and spice, alongside seasonal white turnips stuffed with mushrooms. A delightful surprise for diners will be the inclusion of Matsusaka beef, renowned for its rich flavor, showcasing the hotel’s commitment to the highest quality ingredients.

But it doesn't stop there; traditional dishes such as "Golden Crab Yee Fu Noodles" symbolize health and longevity, making them favorites during the celebrations. To top off the meal, guests will indulge in special desserts, including "Nian Gao" (sticky rice cake), which are traditional for the Lunar New Year, and receive red packets (Hong Bao), traditionally filled with money, symbolizing good luck and prosperity.

Meanwhile, JA Kumamoto is working tirelessly to increase exports of its new citrus variety, "Yubare," to meet the festive demands during this season. Scheduled for its inaugural export flight to Taipei on January 16, the association is anticipating the shipment of 5 tons for the New Year celebrations. The brightly colored fruit is hoped to appeal to Taiwanese consumers, as citrus fruits are often shared and gifted during the New Year, symbolizing good fortune.

Aiming for recognition, JA Kumamoto is positioned to create direct ties with Taiwanese buyers, especially after positive feedback was received during prior exploratory visits.

The increased travel demand is also being addressed, with Shizuoka Airport ramping up its flights to Shanghai to cater to the anticipated influx of visitors for the festivities. Schedule expansions starting from January 20 will allow for four weekly flights, reflecting the rising interest and travel needs associated with the celebratory season.

This new travel opportunity aligns perfectly with the festivities as travelers look to connect with family or explore traditional celebrations across the region. The convenience and availability of these options make Lunar New Year traveling more feasible.

Both culinary and travel sectors are poised for thriving business as they cater to festive traditions. With hotels offering gourmet experiences and food associations focusing on export opportunities, this unique combination underlines the significance of food and its role during Lunar New Year.

The strong emphasis on food during celebrations captures the heart of Lunar New Year traditions, where families gather not just to reconnect, but also to enjoy culinary delights imbued with significance. From vibrant dishes to festive gatherings, 2025’s Lunar New Year offers culturally rich experiences for everyone involved.

Expectations for this Lunar New Year are high, and the spotlight on food and festivities has never been brighter, catering not only to local taste buds but also international palates eager to join the celebration.
