Luke Plapp And Brodie Chapman Triumph At Cycling Nationals

Plapp wins men's individual time trial for third time; Chapman seizes women's title for the first time following strong preparations.

The 2025 Road Cycling National Championships kicked off with intense competition on January 9, held at Perth, Western Australia. This year's championships featured individual time trials for both elite men and women, drawing attention from cycling enthusiasts across the country.

Luke Plapp emerged victorious for the men's elite time trial, making it his third national title. The competition proved to be fierce, with 14 competitors including the previous champion, Plapp himself, racing on a 38.4 km flat course set against the backdrop of Perth. The layout allowed for straightforward metrics—measuring pure time trialing prowess, and Plapp's results did not disappoint. He clocked in at 46 minutes and 33 seconds, reaching speeds averaging 49.495 km/h. His closest competitor, Jay Vine from the UAE Team Emirates XRG, finished 8 seconds behind, with Kieran O'Brien coming third, trailing by 54 seconds.

"Last year's Paris Olympics, I hadn't been able to clinch good TT performances for a bit. It was all about how fast I could maintain from the start," said Plapp with visible relief and excitement. His efforts secured him yet another title, building on his previous victories from 2021 and 2024.

On the women's side, the race saw the emergence of Brodie Chapman, racing for the UAE Team ADQ. With three-time reigning champion Grace Brown having retired, the field was open for new competitors. Chapman won the elite women's time trial, completing the 28.8 km course in just 39 minutes and 53 seconds. She beat second-placed Amber Pate by 33 seconds, with Anya Louw finishing third.

Chapman, who also claimed the road championship title last year, expressed her appreciation for her team's preparations leading to the race: "This victory is thanks to the team's fantastic support, improving my mindset and increasing my goals." Her comment underscored the team's hard work, especially following her aerodynamic tests held at the velodrome last October, showcasing her tactical approach to racing.

These championships serve as the foundation for many upcoming races, including the Santos Tour Down Under, marking them as significant opportunities for cyclists to showcase their readiness for the international scene. The enthusiasm surrounding the events hinted at both the athletes' individual talents and the larger communal effort within Australian cycling.

With the elite men's and women's events concluding, the championships also featured junior and U23 competitive categories, ensuring the continued growth and identification of young talents within the sport. The overall atmosphere was one of camaraderie and shared ambition, with athletes both pushing their limits and encouraging one another as they represented their teams and local regions.

Meanwhile, as the participants prepare for the road to international recognition, of most importance will be how they each adapt their strategies leading to more significant tours and competitions. Plapp's and Chapman's wins serve not just as immediate accolades but as stepping stones for greater achievements on the global stage.

The Road Cycling National Championships stand not just as contests for titles but as celebrations of dedication, resilience, and the spirit of competition, fostering the sportsmanship needed to propel Australian cyclists forward as they pursue their dreams.
