Luis Alberto Paz López Captured At Guatemala-Honduras Border

Dangerous hitman known as "El Gordo Paz" apprehended by police after attempted escape.

The National Civil Police (PNC) of Guatemala successfully apprehended Luis Alberto Paz López, known as "El Gordo Paz," on February 28, 2025. The arrest took place at the El Florido border crossing, located between Camotán, Chiquimula, and Honduras, preventing him from escaping to the neighboring country. Paz, aged 27, was wanted for his alleged involvement in several violent crimes, particularly two murder warrants issued by the court system in Zacapa, dating back to October 2023.

Authorities highlighted the seriousness of the charges against Paz López, emphasizing his role as a dangerous hitman actively evading law enforcement. The PNC revealed he was allegedly responsible for the murder of officer Juan Carlos, who was killed on October 17, 2023, at kilometer 134 near the Río Hondo crossing. During this incident, officer Carlos attempted to identify Paz, who responded by opening fire, resulting in the officer's death.

This tragic event occurred when the officer and his partner exited their police vehicle for routine inspection. The suspect's lethal aggression against law enforcement made him a high-priority target for authorities, to prevent him from inflicting harm on any more individuals.

Adding to the severity of his alleged actions, Paz López reportedly committed another homicide prior to the officer's murder. On October 8, 2023, he was accused of fatally shooting a 26-year-old man, who was riding as a passenger on a mototaxi, in what police described as a likely crime of passion. This incident also took place within the vicinity of Gualán, Zacapa.

Detectives from the Specialized Criminal Investigation Division (DEIC) played a significant role during the apprehension, following leads throughout the area leading up to the arrest. Their persistent surveillance of suspected criminal activities led to the breakthrough required to detain Paz before he could cross the border.

"We had clear information indicating Paz was evading law enforcement and was to be caught to face serious charges against him, some of which include violent murders," stated Kevin Romero, PNC spokesperson. The authorities are continuing investigations to ascertain if Paz is implicated in any additional crimes, as the scope of his criminal activities remains under scrutiny.

El Gordo Paz's capture not only signifies progress within the fight against rampant criminality in the region but also reflects the unwavering dedication of Guatemalan law enforcement. The police force remains committed to identifying and apprehending those involved in violent crime, seeking to restore normalcy and safety for citizens.

Paz López's arrest creates hope for community families previously affected by violence. Notably, residents of Zacapa have expressed relief, emphasizing the need for increased police presence and stronger measures against crime.

The events surrounding Luis Alberto Paz López highlight the challenges faced by law enforcement as they work tirelessly to bring dangerous criminals to justice. The PNC's strategic operations demonstrate their commitment to ensuring public safety, and with the successful apprehension of one of the region's most notorious figures, many are optimistic about the future of security initiatives.

While the judicial process continues to follow, authorities encourage the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity across communities. Citizens play a pivotal role when it involves maintaining peace and safety, acting as the eyes and ears of the system. The community's partnership with law enforcement remains integral to the eradication of criminal elements within Guatemala.

El Gordo Paz's criminal history and his recent apprehension serve as stark reminders of the crime challenges facing Guatemalan law enforcement. Authorities are committed to using intelligence, resourcefulness, and community cooperation as they work to dismantle criminal operations.
